Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Aug. 19, 2014) - Winston-Salem scored six times in the second inning, leading the Dash to a 6-4 win over the Salem Red Sox in front of 4,889 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The win moves Winston-Salem to within two games of Salem in the chase for the final Southern Division playoff spot with 13 regular season contests remaining. This three-game series continues on Wednesday night.
The Dash (27-30, 57-69) unleashed their offensive outburst against Salem starter Joe Gunkel (3-5) in the bottom of the second. Trailing 2-0, Trey Michalczewski started the rally with a double, and Jake Peter drove him in with a two-bagger of his own. Nick Basto singled to place runners at the corners. Omar Narvaez singled to right field, bringing Peter home to tie the game at 2-2.
Keenyn Walker kept things going with a walk to load the bases. Courtney Hawkins singled to left field, driving in two for his Carolina League-leading 80th and 81st RBIs of the season. Keon Barnum capped the six-run frame with a two-run double, giving the Dash a 6-2 cushion.
Salem (27-26, 60-61) provided a hefty scare in the ninth against Dash closer Dave Putman. The Red Sox loaded the bases before Reed Gragnani's line drive was caught by Cleuluis Rondon, ending the contest. For Putman, it was his second save of the season.
The visitors from the Roanoke Valley plated the initial runs in the second inning. Kendrick Perkins and Jake Romanski recorded RBI groundouts against Dash starter Terance Marin (4-3), pushing the Red Sox to a 2-0 lead.
Salem drew closer in the sixth inning when Mario Martinez cranked a two-run homer off Marin to left-center field. Martinez's ninth round-tripper of the year cut the deficit to 6-4.
Marin pitched six innings, allowing four runs and eight hits while striking out five in his first start since July 31. Sean Hagan and Raul Fernandez each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen before Putman closed the door.
Winston-Salem and Salem will resume the big series at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday. The Dash will send right-hander Brandon Brennan (1-0, 3.00 ERA) to the mound, while the Red Sox counter with righty Pat Light (5-5, 5.18 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For tickets, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
