Chukars Game Notes: Missoula

August 18, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

LAST GAME: It was the man on the mound that followed Zimmer that looked like a dominant force. Torey Deshazier pitches 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out a Chukars high 11 batters in a 4-1 victory of Missoula. Idaho Falls sent Kyle Zimmer to the mound for his first rehab start. The San Francisco native faced only three batters. Deshazier was able to work with a lead, thanks to a Ryan O'Hearn two run home run in the first. Idaho Falls has tallied a first inning home run in each of the past three games. Robert Pehl belted a two run blast of his own in the third.

STREAKY BIRDS: Idaho Falls is trending in the right direction after a slow start to the 2nd half of the season. The Chukars have won 10 of their past 14 games. Of the 14 games, 13 of them were against the Pioneer League North. The wins came right after a stretch in which they lost six of seven games.

WHO'S TOP DOG?: Both Missoula and Idaho Falls have University of Washington products putting up great numbers in the Pioneer League. Robert Pehl is the Chukars representative, posting a .358 average, which is tied for 4th in the league. His 38 RBI's are 2nd behind Ryan O'Hearn for the team lead. The Osprey's Husky is Trevor Mitsui. The first baseman is 3rd in the league in home runs with 11. He's also 2nd in the league in RBI's with 43. His .330 batting average is 6th in the league. There's six Huskies in the Pioneer League this season.

WHAT ROTATION?: Idaho Falls hasn't had a rotation all season, and the recent off days, rehab starts, and rainouts have made the Chukars scramble even more to find a way to use their pitchers. This season, 14 different pitchers have started at least one game for Idaho Falls, with the average length of start about three innings. That's largely because eight off the 25 Idaho Falls pitchers this season have been coming off an injury, limiting their innings. Kyle Zimmer became the latest to make his rehab start debut with Idaho Falls, facing three batters Sunday against Missoula.

INTERDIVISION PLAY: This is the final day of the second stint of interdivision play. In the first wave, the South toppled the North with a 34-22 record. The South has the slim advantage in the 2nd stint, going 27-25 in the 52 games.
