Charlotte Knights News Release

(Durham, NC) - 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run, two-out home run as the Durham Bulls beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 10-5 on Sunday in the finale of their three-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Myers, a Thomasville, NC native, appeared in his sixth game with the Bulls on a Major League rehab assignment from Tampa Bay. The two-run home run was his second with Durham as he works his way back from a stress fracture in his right wrist.

The Bulls combined on 12 hits in the game en route to the series win. Catcher Ali Solis added an eighth inning home run off of Charlotte reliever Frank De Los Santos. The three-run home run was his third of the season. Durham shortstop Nick Franklin had three hits and two runs scored.

Durham reliever C.J. Riefenhauser (3-3, 1.55) threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win. Starter Mike Montgomery allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits over 3.2 innings pitched and did not factor in Sunday's decision.

It was a historic day for Charlotte starter Matt Zaleski, who made his 74th career start with the Knights -- the new all-time franchise record for games started. Zaleski passed Charlie Haeger (73) for first place and also moved into fourth place all-time in franchise history in strikeouts passing Jon Rauch. In all, Zaleski tossed two innings on Sunday and allowed four runs on five hits. He threw 70 pitches on the day.

The Knights scored four of their five runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a Matt Tuiasosopo two-run single. Tuiasosopo had two of Charlotte's seven hits. Saturday's hero Jared Mitchell added an RBI single in the fourth frame as well. Mitchell now has 15 hits with the Knights in 14 games since returning from Double-A Birmingham.

UNC Charlotte standout Tyler Barnette was promoted to the Knights from Single-A Kannapolis before the game and made his Triple-A debut on Sunday. Barnette, a Hickory, NC native, was perfect over two innings. He struck-out one batter. Reliever Scott Snodgress (0-1, 7.20) was saddled with the loss after allowing the two-run home run to Myers. Snodgress gave up two runs on two hits over three innings.

Sunday's matchup was the final one between the two North Carolina teams this season. The first place Bulls won 12 of the 21 games.
