Revs Sink Bluefish, Completing Series Sweep

August 17, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution finalized a three-game sweep of the Bridgeport Bluefish, winning 5-1 on Sunday evening at Santander Stadium. The Revs maintain a half game lead for first place in the Freedom Division's second half standings, having won seven of their last nine games overall, and will continue their homestand as they welcome the Lancaster Barnstormers to town to open a three-game series on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Following the blueprint of many recent victories, the Revs fell behind initially, only to take control of the game soon after.

Bridgeport scored a first inning run on a two-out RBI single to left-center by Ramon Castro for an early 1-0 lead, but Revs pitchers allowed nothing else the rest of the day.

Following a lengthy argument between innings that included the ejection of Bridgeport manager Willie Upshaw after a called third strike, Bryant Nelson jumped on the first pitch from Bridgeport lefty Matt Iannazzo in the bottom of the second for a home run to left field, his first of the year, tying the game at 1-1.

The Revs broke the tie with a four-run outburst in the fourth. Nelson led off that inning with a single and Sean Smith drew a walk to set the table. With two outs, Justin Greene walked to keep the inning alive, ending the afternoon of Iannazzo (3-6) after 3.2 innings. Wilson Valdez greeted reliever Joe Bateman with the biggest hit of the game, a three-run double down the left field line, giving York a 4-1 lead. Valdez took third on a throwing error by left fielder Fred Lewis, and scored on an RBI double off the Arch Nemesis in left field by Eric Patterson, increasing the lead to 5-1.

Revs starter Jorge Martinez (6-7) snapped a personal three-game losing streak, allowing just four hits and one run over 5.2 innings. The righty walked only two and struck out a season-high eight batters.

Ian Durham tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, and Edward Paredes closed it with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, having now retired 31 of 34 batters over his last seven appearances.

Valdez led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Patterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk, reaching base three times. Nelson went 2-for-4 with a home run. Of York's nine hits, five went for extra bases.

The Revs improve to a season-best 17 games over .500 with a 62-45 record, while earning the 299th win in the history of Santander Stadium.

Notes: Smith singled in the eighth inning, extending his hitting streak to a season-best eight consecutive games. Greene was held hitless in three at-bats, snapping his 10-game hitting streak, the Revs' fourth longest of the season. The sweep is the Revs' fifth of the year and third at home, while they still have not been swept in a series of three games or longer. York righty Corey Thurman (7-4, 3.39) faces Lancaster lefty Dan Osterbrock (8-4, 3.57) in Monday's opener. It is 800 Minute Reading Club Night presented by York County Libraries. It is also Penn Waste Night, as fans who bring a recyclable item get $5 off a field box ticket. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
