Boulders Roll to Series Win over Quebec

(POMONA, N.Y.) - One night after a thrilling walk-off win, the Rockland Boulders offense continued to impress beating Quebec 11-5 on Sunday at Provident Bank Park. It was the third straight win for the Boulders (45-35) while sending Les Capitales (39-41) to their third consecutive loss.

Rockland started things off very quickly in the first, scoring five runs off Leondy Perez. Matt Nandin reached on an error by shortstop Jonathan Malo and three batters later, the Boulders had the bases loaded with one out. Joe Maloney and Stephen Cardullo each hit RBI singles before Marcus Nidiffer hammered a three-run home run, giving the Boulders a 5-0 lead.

They then tacked on a pair of runs in the second inning on an Antone DeJesus RBI base hit. Two batters later, Nandin came home as Jerod Edmondson grounded into a double play for a 7-0 advantage after two innings. Starting pitcher Joe Donino also performed well early, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Rene Leveret began the top of the fifth with a single that broke up the no-hit bid and started a big rally. The first three Capitales reached in the fifth with Mike Provencher driving in Quebec's first run of the game. Aaron Brill then sacrificed two runners into scoring position before a wild pitch brought in another run. Matt Helms followed with a run scoring single, cutting the Boulders lead to 7-3 and putting runners at the corners with only one out. Donino was able to finally work out of the inning by getting Balbino Fuenmayor to ground out, but not before a second wild pitch gave Quebec another run.

Les Capitales inched a little closer in the top of the seventh when reliever Shawn Gilblair walked Asif Shah with the bases loaded. However, Rockland quickly regained a three run lead as Joe Maloney singled to left in the bottom half of the inning, making it an 8-5 contest. Edmondson then delivered the final blow in the eighth inning with a three-run homer off of reliever Jay Johnson.

Donino (3-3) got the win going six innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out six and walking three. Perez (6-6) took the loss, snapping a five start win streak, giving up seven runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.

Rockland continues a six-day home stand on Mon., Aug. 18 as they welcome in the Fargo-Moorehead Redhawks at 7 p.m. for the start of a three-game series. It is the final series against an American Association team this season, the Boulders a 10-6 in interleague play so far in 2014.
