Omaha Storm Chasers August 17th Game Notes

August 17, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

LAST NIGHT'S WIN: Against his former team, Brian Bocock hit a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth to propel Omaha past Las Vegas 3-2 and in to sole possession of first place. Buddy Baumann posted his longest Triple-A start (5.0 innings) and struck out a career high nine.

BEST IN THE NORTH: The Chasers lead the American Conference North by 1.0 game or more for the first time since June 28 in Oklahoma City. The last ten days, the division race has been within 1.0 games between Omaha and Iowa, and has been that close for 18 of the last 21 days.

PEGUE-ROLLING: Since going 0-for-5 with five strikeouts July 25, Carlos Peguero has a PCL- leading nine homers, is tied for the league lead in extra-base hits at 15 with Iowa's Mike Olt and Jorge Soler, and is hitting .347 (26-for-75) to raise his average from .238 to .263 (highest it has been since July 5). Peguero is tied with Tacoma's Stefan Romero for the most PCL homers in August at 7.

BASE CHASERS: Paulo Orlando is tied with Gary Brown of Fresno and Austin Wates of Oklahoma City for the PCL lead at 32 steals (career high for Orlando). Since Terrance Gore joined the team August 7, he and Orlando are the top two base stealers in the league with eight and six respectively. The 135 steals for Omaha lead the PCL and are tied for the third most in their PCL history with 2000 (PCL high 173 in 2002, which is the last time they led the league, and 152 in 2011).

STARTING OFF: Chasers starters have allowed seven earned runs in 23.1 combined innings (2.70 ERA) over the past four games, nearly matching the five earned runs Liam Hendriks gave up in his last outing on August 12. Hendriks has given up ten runs in his last two starts over 13.0 innings after he had given up just 11 total runs in his previous five starts and 35.0 innings.

GOING GOING JANISH: Paul Janish has collected 14 hits in his last eight starts (14-for- 30 for a .467 average) and has the best batting average on the Chasers in the month of August at .375 (15-for-40, after starting the month 1-for-10 in the first four games of the month). HIT MERRIFIELD: Despite going hitless in two straight starts for the first time in an Omaha uniform, Whit Merrifield still has ten more hits than any other player in the PCL with 95 in his 62 games, while still having the most doubles at 24 and the third best average at .365 (95-for-260).

VERSUS VEGAS: Even with last night's win, Omaha still has their worst non-conference record against the 51s at 3-6, but the Chasers hold a 9-8 edge in the last 17 games between the teams in Omaha. Even with two straight wins, the Chasers are 5-7 in non-conference home games in 2014.

DAY-O: Omaha plays in their 4th day game since the ASG today (14-13 in day games in 2014).
