West Virginia Pulls Away Late for 13-3 Win over Legends

West Virginia scored nine runs in the last two innings and went on to a 13-3 win over the Lexington Legends in front of 6,151 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Saturday night. JaCoby Jones hit a grand slam and drove in five runs for the Power, Adam Landecker had two hits and three runs batted in, and Wyatt Mathisen was four-for-five with an RBI. West Virginia had 18 hits in the game.

The Power opened the scoring with a run in the first inning on a triple by Michael Fransoso and a sacrifice fly by Jones. The Legends tied it in the third on Dominique Taylor's run-scoring single and took the lead with a run in the fourth on Carlos Garcia's infield hit with the bases loaded.

The Legends extended their lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth, but the Power came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. Mathisen's two-out double scored Erich Weiss from first base, and Mathisen came home with the tying run on a single by Landecker.

The Power took a 4-3 lead in the seventh when Edwin Espinal singled home Fransoso with two outs.

West Virginia sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth inning. Landecker had a two-run double and Fransoso a two-run triple as the Power scored five runs on five hits.

In the ninth, Landecker walked, Jeff Roy singled and Fransoso was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Jones lined his 22nd home run of the year to left field, giving the Power their 13-3 margin.

West Virginia reliever Henry Hirsch (4-6), who entered the game in the sixth inning, picked up the win. Matt Tenuta (5-10), who relieved Legends starter Pedro Fernandez in the fifth, was the losing pitcher.

The Power have won two out of three in the series, which concludes Sunday. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
