Wingnuts Are Lovin' It, Trade for McDonald

WICHITA, KS (August 16, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts' roster already featured seven players that were part of their 2013 run to the American Association's championship series. On Saturday, the team added another when they acquired versatile outfielder Jared McDonald from the St. Paul Saints in exchange for a player to be named later.
The do-it-all 26-year old has played every position but catcher in his six year professional career. He began this season in the Atlantic League with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs where he hit .293 with nine RBI in 28 games. McDonald next headed to the Frontier League to play with the Southern Illinois Miners for almost the entire month of June. On July 2nd, the native of Tucson, Arizona was traded to the St. Paul Saints, making the American Association the third different league he suited up in this season. In 29 games with the North Division club, McDonald was batting .258 with two home runs and 19 RBI. One of his home runs came against Wichita on August 2nd.
The speedy McDonald was an everyday player last season for the Nuts, participating in 97 of the 100 games. He hit .301 and drove in 54 runs with five long balls. He also stole 22 bags. Playing mostly in the outfield, with a few appearances at third base and one at second, McDonald committed eight errors in 168 chances. In 2012, his first season in Wichita, McDonald posted a .236 batting average and .986 fielding percentage at an assortment of positions.
A left-handed hitter and right-handed fielder, McDonald hit .329 with 17 doubles, 53 RBI, and 17 stolen bases for the North American League's Yuma Scorpions in 2011. McDonald was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round in 2009 out of Arizona State University. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound McDonald played for the Sun Devils in the 2009 College World Series, and also spent two seasons at Pima Community College where he hit .422 as a freshman and sophomore. McDonald is a lifetime .270 hitter with 114 runs scored, 35 doubles, nine triples, 14 home runs, 111 RBI, and 36 stolen bases in 235 games played.
McDonald will fill the spot on the active roster that was vacated when fellow outfielder David Amberson was placed on the disabled list. McDonald is expected to be in uniform this evening.
