RED WINGS GAME NOTES - Saturday, August 16 (7:05 p.m.)

Syracuse Chiefs (72-53) @ Rochester Red Wings (68-59) - Frontier Field, Rochester, NY

RHP Taylor Hill (10-6, 2.94) vs. LHP Logan Darnell (6-5, 3.30)

TONIGHT'S GAME: The Red Wings crucial four-game series against the first-place Syracuse Chiefs (Nationals) continues Saturday night (7:05) at Frontier Field after the Wings dropped the opener 6-4 Friday night in front of a sellout crowd. Rochester is just 2-3 on the homestand, 6-8 in August and have played just .500 baseball since June 6 (35-26). With only 17 games remaining in the regular season, Rochester trails Syracuse by 5.0 games in the North and Pawtucket by 3.0 games in the Wild Card. Meanwhile, Syracuse is 9-2 in their last 11 games after a 16-game stretch in which they went just 4-12. The Chiefs - who own a 2.0-game lead in the IL North - are bidding to make the IL playoffs for the first time since 1998 -- the longest active postseason drought in the IL.

WITH A WIN TONIGHT...:

- The Wings will avoid losing 3 straight games at home for just the 2nd time this season and for the first time since April 14-17(1)...As it is, the Wings have lost just 3 straight at Frontier Field for the first time since June 17-18.

MOUND MATCHUP: Saturday's matchup features a pair of 25-year-old Tennessee natives, who will square off for the 2nd time this season. Hill got the upper hand in the first matchup on May 29 at Frontier Field allowing just 1 run on 3 hits over 8.0 IP to pick up the victory. Darnell took the loss allowing 3 runs (1 ER) on 7 hits in 2,0 IP.

- Logan Darnell, fresh off completing Rochester's 22nd no-hitter in franchise history on Monday, will make his 18th start of the season for the Wings. Darnell allowed just one walk over 6.0 hitless innings against DUR in a game suspended from July 24. Over his last 3 outings with Rochester, he's 2-0, 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP).

- Taylor Hill makes his 22nd start of the season and his 3rd against the Wings (1-0, 2.77 ERA, 4 ER, 13.0 IP). If you take out Hill's 2 starts against Charlotte this season (2-0, 29.08 ERA, 14 ER in 4.1 IP), he's 10-4 with a 2.00 ERA. Still, his 2.94 ERA is 3rd-best in the IL, his 1.15 WHIP ranks 2nd in the league & his 10 wins are T-5th.

FOR STARTERS: After Kris Johnson allowed 6 runs over 6 2/3 innings in the loss last night, the Wings rotation is just 4-7 with a 5.03 ERA in August. After posting a 4.00 ERA in April, Wings starters had gone 35-26 with a 3.41 ERA from May-July. Darnell will already be the 9th different starter the Wings have used in the first 15 games of August. The Wings used just 12 different starters over the first four months of the season.

- Johnson is 0-3 with a 9.45 ERA in 3 August starts...Was 9-4, 2.79 over his first 17 starts of the season.

- Alex Meyer is 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in 3 August starts...Was 6-4, 3.05 ERA over his first 21 starts of the year.

PITCHING PROBLEMS: The Wings, who had the best ERA in the IL since May 23, gave up that position after allowing 9 runs on Thursday night to Durham and have now fallen back to 3rd after giving up 6 more runs on Friday night. The Wings have allowed 8 or more runs in 4 of their last 7 games (53 total; 7.6 R/G) after yielding 8 or more in a game 4 times in their previous 70 contests. The Wings, who entered the month of August with a 3.33 team ERA have posted a 5.04 mark over their first 14 games in August -- the 3rd-worst mark in the league this month (CHA 5.11 & GWN 5.75).

CC RAKING AT HOME: After his solo homer in the 3rd inning Friday night, Chris Colabello has now hit 5 homers in his last 10 games at Frontier Field (June 30- ) after going over a year between homers in Rochester. In fact, before hitting a homer on June 30 vs. NOR at Frontier Field, his previous 12 Triple-A homers had all come on the road. Since June 28, Colabello is hitting .324 (11-for-34) with 3 2B, 5 HR and 12 RBI in 11 games at Frontier Field. Despite playing in only 44 games with Rochester this season, his 8 HR are tied for the team lead (Romero 8 HR in 113 G). In 133 career games with Rochester, Colabello has 32 homers in 492 AB (1 HR/15.38 AB) -- for comparison sake, that ratio would lead the IL this season (CHA's Andy Wilkins, 1 HR/15.71 AB).

HICKS HEATING UP: Red Wings OF Aaron Hicks has carried his success from Double-A into the Triple-A ranks. Over his first 8 games with Rochester, Hicks has four multi-hit games -- including three straight -- batting .357 (10-for-28). Since July 1, Hicks is batting .343 (46-134) with 16 XBH and 21 RBI in 36 games.

PINTO PICKING IT UP: Wings C/DH Josmil Pinto has collected multiple hits in 8 of his last 14 games, raising his average 35 points over the last 2 weeks. Over his last 24 games, Pinto is batting .314 (27-86) with 11 2B, 3B, 4 HR and 25 RBI. Over his first 20 games after being optioned down from MIN, he batted just .246 with 6 XBH and 7 RBI.

PRIMETIME PRYOR: After tossing 2 1/3 hitless innings on Friday, Wings reliever Stephen Pryor has allowed just 2 hits over his first 8 G w/ ROC since coming over from the Mariners in the Kendrys Morales deal. Opposing hitters are batting just .054 (2-37) off the right-hander who has walked 11 while striking out 13 in 12.0 IP. The only run allowed by Pryor came via a Russ Canzler solo HR on August 1 at LHV -- since he has posted a season-high 8.0-inning scoreless streak (H, 7 BB, 9 SO).
