Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Nick Buss played Superman on Superhero Night at Raley Field and helped the Sacramento River Cats (72-55) defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (50-77) 4-1.

Colorado third baseman Rafael Ynoa started the game with a lead-off homer off of Sacramento's lefty Drew Pomeranz to give the Sky Sox an early 1-0 edge, but that would prove to be their only run of the game.

Nick Buss' stellar defense in the second inning kept Colorado off the scoreboard as he threw out Dustin Garneau at home to end the inning after tagging from third on a fly ball.

The Sky Sox maintained their lead until the fourth, as Jose Martinez hit a ground ball to right fielder, allowing left fielder Shane Peterson to cross the plate, knotting the game at one. Shortly after, Daric Barton was able to score an additional run after Anthony Aliotti hit a sacrifice fly, bringing the game to 2-1.

No runs were scored by either team until Aliotti plated Buss and Barton in the eighth frame after center fielder Tim Wheeler's fielding error, giving the Cats a 4-1 advantage.

Buss ended up 2-for-4 with two runs and extended his hitting-streak to 21 games. Martinez went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Peterson finished 1-for-3 with a run and a walk.

Pomeranz (3-0, 2.88 ERA) earned the win after pitching six innings for Sacramento giving up one run on five hits and two walks while adding nine strikeouts. Tucker Healy and Seth Frankoff each pitched one inning of scoreless relief, and Evan Scribner earned the save with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning. Colorado's Dan Houston (2-5, 6.17 ERA) took the loss and gave up two runs on three hits and had two strikeouts in four innings of work.

Sacramento begins a four-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks tomorrow on Star Wars Night. The Cats will send right-handed pitcher Arnold Leon (10-6, 5.39 ERA) to the mound to face off against RedHawks righty Alex White (2-5, 6.70 ERA) with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
