Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - RH Matt Bowman shut out the Cubs on four hits over 7.1 innings and RH Miguel Socolovich registered a five-out save in the Las Vegas 51s (72-56) 2-0 win over the Iowa Cubs (67-61) on Friday night at Principal Park. The 51s won three of the four games in the series -- the only set between the clubs this season. The Cubs were shut out for the 10th time this year.

Bowman was in complete control all night in picking up his second triple-A win. He struck out the side in the first inning and didn't allow a baserunner until Matt Szczur led off the fourth inning with a double down the left field line. Szczur advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded there as Bowman induced a strikeout and flyout to end the frame. After that, Bowman didn't allow a baserunner to second base until Rafael Lopez and Ryan Kalish had singles in the eighth. The latter of which marked the end of his 103-pitch outing. Socolovich came in and retired the final two hitters of the inning to preserve the two-run lead. He stayed in for the ninth and retired the side in order on 15 pitches to nail down his second save of the season.

The 51s got on the board in the second inning against LH Eric Jokisch. Cory Vaughn knocked in Taylor Teagarden with a one-out single that went off the glove of Elliot Soto and into left field. They would add an insurance run in the sixth inning when Matt Reynolds doubled and scored on an Andrew Brown single to left field. Reynolds hit .389 (7-for-18) with five extra-base hits and five RBI in the four-game series.

Jokisch took his first loss since June 28 despite posting his team-best 15th quality start. He worked six innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits, walked one, and struck out six. Jokisch has worked at least six innings in 19 of his 24 starts on the year.

RH Alberto Cabrera and Arodys Vizcaino threw three scoreless innings of relief. Cabrera gave up a double, a walk, and struck a batter out in a two innings. After retiring the first two hitters, Vizcaino allowed a double and walk in his 21-pitch frame.

The Cubs were limited to four hits, and Lopez had two of them. He has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games and is batting .333 (14-for-42) with two doubles and seven RBI, and has walked 10 times while striking out just nine times in that span.

Iowa's defense turned three double plays, and they haven't committed an error in a season-best five straight games.

The Cubs continue their eight-game home stand by hosting the Salt Lake Bees for a four-game series beginning Saturday night at 7:05. RH Carlos Pimentel (3-8, 5.26) takes the ball for the Cubs in the series opener against former I-Cub Chris Volstad (1-1, 5.58). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and 104.5 FM. It will also be streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 PM.
