Charlotte Knights News Release
(Durham, NC) - Mayo Acosta's RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning led the Durham Bulls to a 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights in the opening game of their three-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC on Friday. The Knights have dropped four-straight games.
Charlotte reliever Eric Surkamp (3-5, 4,76) started the 11th inning and gave up the winning hit to Acosta and was saddled with the loss. Surkamp, who came on in relief, gave up a leadoff single to Tim Beckham, which put the go ahead run on first base with no outs. Mike Fontenot came through with a sacrifice bunt, which put Beckham in scoring position with one down. Acosta then doubled on the second pitch he saw from Surkamp, which won the game for the first-place Bulls.
Charlotte starter Andre Rienzo tossed 4.2 scoreless innings and did not factor in the decision. Rienzo walked five batters and struck-out four and was on his way to a solid game for the Knights. Both teams however, failed to push any runs across over the first 10 innings of Friday's game. The Knights combined to record four hits in Friday's loss, while the Bulls have five hits.
Reliever Cory Burns tossed an effective 11th inning to hang on for the win. Burns (1-0, 0.00) gave up one hit and struck-out two Knights en route to the win.
The two teams will move on for game two of the series on Saturday from Durham, NC. RHP Bobby Doran (4-1, 6.11) gets the start for the Knights in game two of the series on Saturday. Doran and the Knights will face Durham RHP Alex Colome (6-5, 3.65). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, and WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM).
