Lake Erie Crushers News Release

JOLIET, Ill. -- Vince Mejia hit a pair of homers and went 4-for-4 at Wuerfel Park on Friday night, as the Lake Erie Crushers took the series opener against the Traverse City Beach Bums, 9-1.

The Crushers (45-33) have now won six of their last seven, and 11 of their last 14, while the loss for the Beach Bums (32-47) was their third in a row.

One night after being held to just a run on five hits, the Crusher offense erupted again, plating nine runs on 13 hits, in a game that was never in question after the Crushers pulled away with a four-run fifth inning.

Mejia's first long ball of the night snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning. It was a solo shot sent over the wall in center field to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. An inning and a half later the Beach Bums used the long ball to plate their only run of the night as Carlos Berroa smashed a solo homer with two outs in the third.

Lake Erie then used a little two-out thunder to reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth. They had the bases loaded with two outs, when Ryan Hutchison went the opposite direction with a single to right field to score Craig Hertler.

The Crushers scored four times an inning later to pull away. Trevor Stevens started the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a single from Hertler. Andrew Davis followed with a two-run double down the left field line, before Mejia delivered the back-breaker, a two-run shot over the wall in center field. The homer was his 12th of the season.

Lake Erie was not done, as they added another run in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Joey Burney drove in all three runs. The Crushers had two on with two out in the seventh when Burney singled to center, scoring Adam Ford in the process.

A walk was issued to Anderson Hidalgo with two outs in the ninth, and Mejia followed with his fourth hit of the night, a double off the wall in left, which nearly left the park. Burney followed with a single down the right field line to plate the final two runs of the night.

Andy Roberts (1-0) turned in a fantastic performance in his second professional start. He allowed just a run on a hit while fanning two over five innings of action to grab his first win as a pro. Rusty Shellhorn (4-4) took the loss after surrendering six runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

Mejia stole the show offensively, in what was his second multi-homerun game of the season. He went 4-for-4, and came a triple away from hitting for the cycle while scoring three times and driving in three as well. Davis hit safely twice on the night and drove in a pair of runs, while Hutchison finished the night with a pair of hits and Burney went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Saturday night. Righty Zach Gordon (2-3, 3.86) will start for the Crushers and right-hander Casey Delgado (6-4, 3.06) will start for the Beach Bums. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
