Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans defeated the Carolina Mudcats 1-0 on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. History was made Thursday when the Pelicans had their first consecutive sellouts in franchise history. SAM WOLFF and LUIS PARRA combined to pitch the Pelicans' ninth shutout of the season...The Pelicans (30-23, 74-47) recorded only two hits on the night off of Carolina starter Adam Plutko, which was a season-low for the Birds. ROYCE BOLINGER hit a single to right center field, but was erased when trying to stretch the hit into a double. In the next at-bat, NICK WILLIAMS broke the game open for the Pelicans, hitting a solo home run to right center field. The home run was the only run support Myrtle Beach needed on the night, as the Pelicans won 1-0...Wolff tossed five scoreless innings allowing three hits, striking out five, and walking one. The right-hander worked out of early jams in the contest. In the first inning, Wolff allowed a leadoff double to Yhoxian Medina and walked Jerrud Sabourin with one out. The South Dakota native then struck out Eric Haase and got Joe Sever to ground out to leave the inning unscathed...

Carolina left two more baserunners on against Wolff, one in both the third and fourth innings. LeVon Washington singled in the third, while Torsten Boss tripled in the fourth. The Mudcats were unable to plate any runners with their hits on the night, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position...Parra came in for the Pelicans in the sixth inning and was flawless. The lefty struck out five Mudcats and did not allow a baserunner over four innings. The southpaw recorded his second career save and his first since August 28, 2011...Wolff (8-4) earned the win for Birds, while Plutko (3-8) received the loss for the Mudcats.

Plutko matched a season and career-high seven innings but took the loss. The two hits allowed matched a season-low for the Carolina hurler.

IF YOU BLINKED, YOU MISSED IT: Thursday's series finale with the Carolina Mudcats featured one run, five hits, and three walks. It took just two hours and five minutes, which was the shortest nine-inning game for both teams on the year. The Pelicans' previous shortest game was two hours and 13 minutes, while Carolina had played a two-hour and 11 minute contest.

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER: Since a blown save in the homestand finale on August 3, the Pelicans bullpen has been lights out. In 30 1/3 innings, the pen has surrendered just two runs, both earned. The group also has two wins (no losses) and is two for two in saves.

PELICANS HISTORY X: The Pelicans passed a set a new franchise record for the longest road winning streak (at least back through 2004) by winning both games on Sunday with nine straight road wins and can continue the run today. It breaks a record set earlier this season; after winning eight straight road contests, the Pelicans lost their first road game to Frederick 5-4 on April 24. The Pelicans have the best road record among full-season MiLB clubs (43-19) and need just one more road win, with seven road games remaining, to set a new franchise record for the most road wins in a season.

FOURS FINALLY FALTER: When scoring four or more runs this season, the Pelicans are 65-13 while just 8-34 when scoring fewer, and the four-run mark has been even more significant of late. The Pelicans 6-5 loss in game two of the doubleheader on Wednesday marked the first time that the club has lost when scoring four or more runs since July 8 (now 15-1 during the stretch) when the team lost 13-9 at Winston-Salem.

FROM THE BEACH TO THE BIGS: Announced just today, the Rangers have promoted RHP JON EDWARDS to the big leagues. Less than two months after LHP ALEXANDER CLAUDIO departed the Grand Strand for Double-A Frisco, he appeared in a big league game, making his major league debut in a perfect inning on Wednesday for the Texas Rangers. They are the 130th-131st Pelicans to play in the big leagues and the 119th-120th to make his debut after his time in Myrtle Beach (six were MLB rehabbers, four previously played in the majors and made it back, and another, Ryan Drese, was a former big leaguer that did not make it back). Edwards is the eleventh former Pelican to make his MLB debut this season, joining ROUGNED ODOR, LUIS SARDINAS, NICK MARTINEZ, NEIL RAMIREZ, BEN ROWEN, ROMAN MENDEZ, KYLE HENDRICKS, MATT WEST, and Claudio.

Claudio, however, is the first 2014 Pelican to make the big leagues. He is the ninth Pelican to play for the Birds and make his MLB debut in the same season and only the second since the team switched affiliations to Texas. 2012 Pelicans right-hander WILMER FONT also did so.

Edwards is a converted position player who spent five years in the Cardinals system as an outfielder.

A PERFECT FIRST IMPRESSION: JOSH MCELWEE fired another scoreless outing on Wednesday, adding 2 2/3 innings to his scoreless stretch to begin his 2014 Pelicans season, now at 19.2 IP. It's now the longest scoreless streak by a Pelicans pitcher this year, passing ANDREW FAULKNER's 18 consecutive shutout innings. McElwee has allowed just eight hits and nine walks in his 19.2 shutout frames and has struck out 25 batters. He fanned 14.25 batters per nine innings while in the South Atlantic League with the Hickory Crawdads before his July 18 promotion. He is fanning 11.44/9 IP in his time in the Carolina League thus far.

RUNNING WILD: CHRIS GARIA swiped six steals on the road trip, including two in Saturday's suspended game (completed Sunday) and picked up another last night. The outfielder is alone in first on the single-season record list in team history in stolen bases, passing Adam Stern (40, 2002). The 43 steals is also career-high for the native of Willemstad, Curaçao. The mark leads the league lead and is tied for the tenth in the minors. The Carolina League record is held by Esex Snead, who stole 109 in 2000 with the Potomac Cannons (then a Cardinals affiliate). The Pelicans also lead the league in stolen bases as a team.

STRUTTING THEIR FEATHERS: The Pelicans roster currently features two players highlighted in Baseball America's list of the Rangers' Top 30 prospects. OF LEWIS BRINSON (No. 15 in the Rangers Top 30) and RHP JOSE LECLERC (16) are both listed by BA.

Unranked in the top 30, CHRIS GARIA is the "Fastest Baserunner" and PRESTON BECK has the "Best Outfield Arm." CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK, traded from Oakland in December, was ranked No. 18 in the Athletics' top 30 by BA. Catcher JORGE ALFARO (2, 54 in the top 100), outfielder NICK WILLIAMS (3), third baseman JOEY GALLO (4, 60), RHPs ALEX "CHI CHI" GONZALEZ (5), and KEONE KELA (18) were all on the Pelicans' Opening Day Roster and are now with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, while LHP ALEXANDER CLAUDIO (27) is now in the Majors with the Texas Rangers.
