Salem Red Sox Game Notes

August 15, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem opens a three-game series against Myrtle Beach on Friday night at LewisGale Field... A win would give the Sox their first six-game winning streak of the season... First pitch at 7:05...

Here Come the Sox: Despite dropping their previous 10 meetings against Potomac, the Salem Red Sox beat the Nationals four times in a 29 hour span from 5 PM Wednesday through 10 PM on Thursday, catapulting past Winston-Salem and Carolina in the Southern Division second-half race. The four victories, coming by the combined score of 20-11, put Salem a half-game ahead of Carolina and one game ahead of Winston-Salem as the three clubs battle to determine who will face Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division Championship Series in September. The Red Sox now have 19 games remaining, to be waged over the next 18 days, a stretch that includes two more doubleheaders and one off day. After hosting the Pelicans for three this weekend, the Sox will relax on Tuesday and begin the final 16-game-in-14-day spring to conclude the regular season.

The Dominican Duo: Salem swept Thursday's doubleheader by winning a pair of pitchers' duels, a feat made possible by the brilliant starting work of both Simon Mercedes and Heri Quevedo. Combined, the duo went 11 innings without allowing an earned run. For Mercedes, it was his first victory since May 23. For Quevedo, it was his first Carolina League triumph since September 7, 2013, when he threw seven scoreless innings in Game One of the Mills Cup Championship Series at Potomac.

Can't Stop The Top: Batting first in the Salem lineup for the 98th and 99th times in 2014 last night, Matty Johnson extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games, the longest individual batting streak the Red Sox have had this season. He's batting .408 (22-for-56) during this stretch, with two home runs, 10 RBI, and 14 runs scored in the last 14 contests. This comes on the heels of an excellent month of July, in which he finished with a .323 average (30-for-93), and an impressive .447 on base percentage. He leads the Sox with 33 multi-hit games.

Maniacal Minutiae: With three homers in the first game on Wednesday, Salem's August home run count surpassed the total from the entire month of July. After only hitting eight homers in July, the Sox have already launched 11 bombs in August.

Even with four wins in the last two days, the Sox are just 11-21 against Potomac and Frederick this season, while they are 46-39 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 6-13 against the Keys and P-Nats, and 18-12 against everyone else.

Dating back to 2012, Salem is 33-12 (.733) in its last 45 games played in the month of August.

10 of Salem's last 19 losses overall have been by two runs or less.

In the months of May and June, Salem was 18-10 at home while only 7-21 on the road. Conversely, in July and August thus far, Salem is only 5-14 at home, versus 13-5 on the road.
