CornBelters Defeat Grizzlies in Normal

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 13-4 Thursday night to pick up the series win at the Corn Crib.

Normal scored 13 runs on 19 hits while cruising to their third straight win against Gateway (45-33). The loss moved the Grizzlies two games back of River City and one game back of Schaumburg in the West Division.

Grizzlies starting pitcher Aaron Newcomb (9-6) allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in two-plus innings.

Normal scored three runs in the first against Newcomb on an Aaron Dudley two-run single and a Richard Lucas RBI single.

Gateway tied the game at 3-3 after scoring three runs in the second inning. Michael Wing hit a solo home run, a run scored on a wild pitch and Michael Johnson recorded an RBI triple.

The tie was brief though as Normal scored four runs in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead. Dudley capped off the inning with a two-run home run, his third of the series.

Kale Kiser hit a fifth inning solo home run to make the score 7-4.

Kiser finished the game 2-for-5 and collected seven hits during the series.

Normal scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to finish the scoring.

The Grizzlies begin a pivotal three-game series with the Schaumburg Boomers Friday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Ja'Vaun West (7-1) will start the series opener for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
