Your Cedar Rapids Kernels enter the final month of the 2014 regular season in the midst of a playoff chase and open a six game home stand on Friday, August 15th with games against Peoria and Quad Cities. Here's a preview of what you can expect these next six games:
August 15-17 vs. Peoria
The Kernels start a six game home stand with three games against the Peoria Chiefs, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
It's Hawkeye Sports Night when the Kernels take on Peoria at 6:35 pm on Friday, August 15th. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a FREE Kernels/Hawkeye Mini-Football. The Kernels will wear special Hawkeye jerseys that will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit the Linn County I-Club. Fans register to win Meet and Greet passes to FryFest and Iowa Volleyball season tickets. And, it's a 98.1 KHAK Kernels Friday Mug Club. Buy a 16 oz. souvenir mug for just $6 and get it filled at the concession stands with regular draft beer or soda. Mug refills are just $3 all game and bring your mug back every Friday Kernels home game for $3 refills. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
One of the biggest nights of the season takes place as it's Cargill/Special Olympics Night on Saturday, August 16th. There will be a HUGE silent auction on the concourse during the game with all the proceeds to benefit Special Olympics. And after the game, enjoy a spectacular FIREWORKS show presented by Special Olympics. Fireworks nights are VERY popular, and seating is already in short supply for this game! Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch between the Kernels and Peoria is set for 6:35 pm.
The Kernels recognize all the 1,000 minute readers that took part in the 16th Annual Kernels Summer Reading Program, presented by Toyota Financial Services on Sunday, August 17th. The readers will be recognized on the field prior to the game and then can get autographs from the Kernels players on the field after the game as part of Planet X Run the Bases Sunday. After the game, fans can run the bases, play catch in the outfield and get autographs from the Kernels on the field. Enjoy Papa Balloon and Face Painting by Kennedy on the concourse during the game. A busy Sunday is on tap as the gates open at 1:00 pm and first pitch between the Kernels and Chiefs is set for 2:05 pm.
August 18-20 vs. Quad Cities
The Kernels continue a six game home stand with three games against the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the Houston Astros.
The home stand continues on Monday, August 18th with Dollar Monday. Regular hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips and Cracker Jack are each just $1 every Monday home game. Plus, get $1 taquitos at the Hacienda Las Glorias / La Cantina Mexican Cart. Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch between the Kernels and River Bandits is set for 6:35 pm.
On Tuesday, August 19th, it's Twins Tuesday, presented by Great Clips. Get an on-line coupon from the Kernels Facebook page or email newsletter for a 2 for 1 ticket offer at Tuesday home games as part of Twins Tuesday, presented by Great Clips. The Kernels will wear special retro jerseys that will be sold via a silent auction on August 29th. And one lucky fan will win a pair of tickets to a Twins game for the 2014 season. Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch between the Kernels and Quad Cities is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
You'll want to be here when the gates open at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, August 20th as First Federal Credit Union will be giving $500 out at the main gates as part of Free Money Wednesday. First Federal Credit Union gives out $500 at the main gates every Wednesday home Kernels game with the top cash prize of $100. First pitch between the Kernels and River Bandits is set for 6:35 pm.
Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Daily Specials!
Run the Bases Sunday, sponsored by Planet X: After every Sunday home game, kids (and adults) can run the bases, play catch on the field and get autographs from the Kernels, sponsored by Planet X with media sponsor 104.5 KDAT. During the game, play Travel Advisors Baseball Bingo, co-sponsored by the Radisson near Mall of America for a chance to win a trip to Minneapolis and see a Twins game. Enjoy the balloon artistry of Papa Balloon on the concourse and face painting by Kennedy. Magician Jackson Green will entertain at Sunday home games.

Tickets for all Kernel home games are available on-line at www.kernels.com; in person at the Kernels Ticket Office, or by calling 896-7560 during Ticket Office Hours. The Kernels Ticket Office is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. The ticket office is closed on Sunday, but opens at 11 am on Kernel Sunday Home games.
