Massey Continues Hot Steak vs Hounds

August 14, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

In the Aesop's Fable, the Hare busts out to an early lead over the Tortoise, only to see the crafty turtle ("slow and steady") creep closer and closer before ultimately winning the race. Apparently, the Tulsa Drillers never read much Aesop.

The Drillers built an 8-0 lead after two innings and went on to defeat the Tortoise (make that the RockHounds), 9-4. Tulsa continued its dominance over the RockHounds, winning for the ninth time in 11 games and staying perfect (5-0) at ONEOK Field.

Tyler Massey's three-run triple in the first inning continued his remarkable streak against the 'Hounds (see below) and gave Tulsa starter Tyler Anderson a 4-0 after the first inning. The Drillers added four more runs in the second, two on Jayson Langfels' single, and never looked back.

Anderson went five scoreless innings, lowering his Texas League-leading earned run average to 2.14 while earning his sixth win.

WP: Tyler Anderson (6-4, 2.14)

LP: Drew Granier (7-6, 4.27)

HR: RockHounds - Jefry Marte (10) Solo in the eighth (off Nate Striz)

Kibbles & Bits

- The RockHounds continue to struggle against the Drillers ... Tulsa leads the season series, 9-2, including a perfect 5-0 at ONEOK Field in Tulsa ... the 'Hounds (67-55) remain three-and-a-half games behind Frisco (70-51) for the league's top overall record.

Second Half : Frisco fell (2-1, in 11 innings) at Springfield, so the RoughRiders (30-22) hold their one-game lead over the RockHounds (29-23).

San Antonio (24-28) split a double-header at home with Arkansas (the clubs were rained out Tuesday), moving to within six games Frisco, and Corpus Christi (22-30) defeated NW Arkansas with an eighth-inning rally. The Hooks are eight games back.

Wild Card : If first half champion Frisco maintains first place in the second half race, the South Division's second playoff team would be a wild card entry, based on the best overall season record among the other three division clubs. The RockHounds (67-55), who hold the league's second-best overall record, lead San Antonio by seven games and Corpus Christi by 11 in the wild card race.

Remaining Schedule : There are 18 games remaining in the 2014 regular season. The RockHounds have one game in Tulsa and three in Springfield (MO) on the current road trip. The 'Hounds then have four games versus San Antonio (road), four versus Corpus Christi (home) and six versus Frisco (three home, three road) over the final two weeks of the season.

- Tulsa's Tyler Massey is hitting .429 (18-42) in the 11-game season series versus the RockHounds, and .229 against the rest of the league. While playing in 109 games overall, Massey has nearly one-third of his RBI (11-of-39) in 11 games versus the 'Hounds.

- Kent Matthes had a two-run single in the ninth ... the former Driller has driven in 287 runs in his last 16 games and has 36 RBI in his last 24 ... Kenny Wilson (3-for-5) extended his hit streak to nine games (15-37, .405) and has hit in 10-of-11 games with the RockHounds (.386).

- Drew Granier took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks, while striking out four. In his last two starts, the right-hander has allowed 14 hits and 13 runs (11 earned) in seven innings, an 11.00 ERA.

- Dusty Coleman struck out three times, bringing his season total to 180. The franchise mark is 184 (Jacques Landry in 2001) and the Texas League's all-time mark is 186, set by Willie Crawford (Albuquerque) in 1966.

- The RockHounds and Drillers conclude their series at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Thursday evening at 7:05, followed by a three-game series versus the Cardinals (Friday-Sunday, August 15-17 at Hammons Field) in Springfield, Missouri. Following an off/travel day (Monday, August 18), the club returns home for the final home stand of the regular season, opening Tuesday, August 19. The 'Hounds host the Corpus Christi Hooks (August 19-22) and the Frisco RoughRiders (August 23-25).
