Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - Early run support helped LHP Miguel Sulbaran (3-3) snap a two-game losing skid as the Tampa Yankees (27-24) defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers (16-34) 7-2 on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The Yankees scored three times off Lakeland starter Edgar De La Rosa in the first inning. Mark Payton led off with a double and later scored on an errant pick-off throw to second by De La Rosa. Eric Jagielo smashed a solo home run over the wall in right-center, adding the second run to the board. With two outs, Matt Snyder hit a ground-rule double over the wall in left-center. A wild pitch advanced Snyder before he scored on a single by Ericson Leonora

Sulbaran had allowed 18 runs in his last three starts combined. The southpaw returned to his normal form, tossing five quality innings for the T-Yanks. Sulbaran allowed two runs on five hits, walking three while striking out five.

A solo home run by Tyler Hanover put the Flying Tigers on the board in the second.

Tampa responded with two runs in the third. Jagielo drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Snyder later walked, placing runners on the corners. Angelo Gumbs then doubled into left field, scoring Jagielo and moving Snyder to third. With two outs, Trent Garrison drove in Snyder with an infield single hit between first and second.

De La Rosa (7-9) surrendered five runs on six hits in three innings of work, walking three while striking out three. The righty had not allowed more than three runs in any of his last 10 outings for Lakeland.

The Flying Tigers scored a second run off Sulbaran in the fifth as Curt Powell singled and later scored on a line drive to center by Conner Harrell.

RHP Alex Burgos cooled down the Tampa offense for four relief innings, striking out seven while allowing a single and a walk. The Yankees added insurance off RHP Calvin Drummond in the eighth. Leonora led off with a triple and scored as Garrison reached on a strikeout-wild pitch. Drummond then walked Danny Oh, Payton and Cito Culver (all on four pitches), forcing in Garrison and giving Tampa a 7-2 lead.

Chris Smith yielded two hits and struck out a pair in two scoreless frames for Tampa. RHP Kyle Haynes earned his first save of the season after pitching two shutout innings, scattering two hits while striking out three.

The series continues on Thursday in Lakeland as the teams play a double-header beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium. RHP Brady Lail (1-0, 7.53 ERA) will start game one for Tampa and LHP Caleb Smith (2-1, 5.31 ERA) is scheduled to start game two.

The T-Yanks return home to Tampa on Friday to begin a three-game set with the Daytona Cubs at 7:00 p.m. Fans can enjoy Social Media Friday, sponsored by Bill Currie Ford.
