Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Waldorf, MD. - August 13, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish split a doubleheader with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, dropping Game One 9-8 and winning 8-7 in Game Two.

In Game One of the doubleheader, Southern Maryland jumped out early for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Bridgeport cut the Blue Crabs lead to 3-1 in the top of the second inning on shortstop Juan Martinez's RBI single and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third inning on second baseman Ramon Castro's three-run home run. After Southern Maryland tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning on second baseman Amadeo Zazueta's RBI single, the 'Fish took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning on center fielder James Simmons's RBI double and scored on right fielder Prentice Redman's two-run home run.

But the back-and-forth battle would continue as Southern Maryland brought the score to 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by shortstop Bobby Stevens and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Zazueta RBI single and a designated hitter Angel Chavez RBI double. Bridgeport retook the lead at 8-7 in the top of sixth inning on Redman's solo home run, his second home run of the night, but with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the last scheduled inning of the game, Zazueta hit a two-run RBI single to give the Blue Crabs a 9-8 win. Zazueta finished game one going four-for-four with six RBIs.

The win went to Southern Maryland's Jake Brown (5-2) after pitching a perfect seventh inning. Tim Gustafson (2-4) took the loss as he gave up the tying and winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Bridgeport starter Matt Iannazzo went four and two-third innings giving up seven runs and six earned runs on eight hits.

In Game Two, Bridgeport took the lead on a solo home run by Simmons in the top of the first inning and doubled their lead later that inning on Castro's RBI single. The Blue Crabs cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first inning and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Zazueta scored on Stevens's fielder's choice. Bridgeport took the lead back in the top of the third inning on designated hitter J.R. Towles's RBI sacrifice fly and a solo home run by Castro.

The 'Fish extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning on left fielder Fred Lewis's RBI sacrifice fly but Southern Maryland answered with an RBI double by center fielder Jermaine Mitchell in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bridgeport restored their three run lead in the top of the fifth inning on shortstop Mike Richard's RBI single but saw Southern Maryland tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning on catcher James Skelton's RBI double and Stevens's RBI single. Towles hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to give the 'Fish a 8-6 lead and despite Southern Maryland picking up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gustafson set down the Blue Crabs in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the 8-7 win, picking up his second save of the season.

Winston Abreu (1-6) earned the win in relief as Bridgeport used five relievers after starting pitcher Julio Rodriguez lasted just an inning for the 'Fish while Charlie Manning (1-6) picked up the loss for Southern Maryland in relief.

Bridgeport concludes their three-game series against Southern Maryland on Thursday August 14th with first pitch at 7:05pm. The Bluefish return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard to begin a seven-game home stand on Monday, August 18th as they face the Long Island Ducks for the first of a three-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
