Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 13, 2014) - The Fort Myers Miracle split a Wednesday doubleheader with the St. Lucie Mets at JetBlue Park. The Mets won game one, 6-1, but the Miracle took game two, 7-3.

In game one, St. Lucie blitzed Miracle starter Brett Lee for five runs in the first four innings. Lee (9-4) lasted just 3.1 innings in a losing effort and surrendered eight hits.

The Mets started the scoring in the first with a two-out RBI single from Phillip Evans. St. Lucie added a pair of runs in the second with a Maikis De La Cruz run-scoring double and sacrifice fly by Gavin Cecchini, 3-0.

In the fourth, the Mets plated two more on a sac fly from L.J. Mazzilli and RBI single by Jared King. The Mets lead reached its zenith in the top of the sixth. Miracle reliever Todd Van Steensel gave up a third Mets sacrifice fly. Evans drove in Cecchini to push the St. Lucie lead to 6-0.

Fort Myers only run came on a solo blast by Niko Goodrum in the bottom of the sixth. On a 1-1 count from Mets starter Michael Fulmer, Goodrum hit a rocket that landed in the upper bowl seating that wraps into fair territory down the right field line. The homer was Goodrum's third of the season.

Fulmer (6-10) was sharp in six innings. Allowing just one run on five hits, Fulmer walked two and struck out five.

In game two, the Miracle opened the scoring on a Dalton Hicks solo home run in the second inning. Mets starter Kevin McGowan left a 1-1 pitch up in the zone and Hicks' drive landed in the St. Lucie bullpen beyond the right field fence, 1-0. The blast was Hicks' 11th of the season.

The Mets snapped back at Fort Myers and spot starter Brandon Peterson in the top of the second. Peterson walked Gilbert Gomez to start the inning. Jeff McNeil then singled into right to put runners on the corners. De La Cruz then bounced a seeing eye single through the left side to plate Gomez and tie the game. After Mazzilli flew out to center, Cam Maron lashed a base hit to left that pushed McNeil home and gave the Mets a brief one-run lead, 2-1.

McGowan (2-4) unraveled in the bottom of the third after recording the first two outs. Hicks singled into right to begin a stretch of eight consecutive Miracle hitters reaching base. Adam Brett Walker dropped a base hit to center and Max Kepler walked to load the bases. McGowan then issued a free pass to Jason Kanzler on four pitches for a RBI walk to draw the Miracle even, 2-2.

Jairo Rodriguez stepped up and hit a soft line drive into right field that plated two runs and put Fort Myers on top. McGowan exited the game after walking Tyler Grimes and reloading the bases. Mets reliever Ryan Fraser entered and promptly gave up a two-run single to Aderling Mejia. On a 2-0 pitch, Mejia served a base hit into left to score two more Miracle runs. Goodrum followed with a line drive to center to knock in the sixth run of the inning and stake Fort Myers to a 7-2 advantage.

Alex Muren tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. Muren (1-1) induced two double plays and struck out a pair. Nick Burdi made a successful debut in the Florida State League with a scoreless sixth and two punch outs. D.J. Jonson allowed an unearned run to score in the seventh.

The Miracle (71-51, 30-23) wrap up a stretch of five games in three days against the Mets (67-53, 27-24) on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. at JetBlue Park. Fans can order tickets by calling (239) 768-4210 or ordering online at www.miraclebaseball.com.
