HarbourCats End Season in Walk-Off Style
August 10, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
The Victoria HarbourCats ended their second season on a high note -- with a walk-off win in front of 1,963 at Sports Traders Diamond at RAP, edging the Kitsap BlueJackets 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Team RBI leader Hunter Mercado-Hood drove in "Mr. HarbourCat" Alex DeGoti in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a three-run inning, turning a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 victory on a glorious afternoon.
The team started the 2014 home schedule with a walk-off, extra-inning win, and capped it with a walk-off victory.
The HarbourCats ended the season with the top attendance in the West Coast League with a total of 42,563 for an average of 1,576 over 27 WCL home games.
On Sunday, Mercado-Hood was 2-4 with two RBIs, while DeGoti was 1-4 with three runs driven in. Alan Baldwin and Bryce Greager were both 2-4, while Victoria product Kelly Norris-Jones played his final game in a HarbourCats uniform by going 3-3 and raising his season average to .300. John Grimsley had two runs and an RBI.
Alex Rogers came on in relief with 2.1 innings and one hit allowed to pick up the win, following starter Riley Edmonds and relievers Eric Hegadoren and Dylan Stowell.
The result leaves the HarbourCats with a 25-29 record, a three-game improvement over the team's inaugural season.
Mercado-Hood ended the year second in batting average with a .385 mark, behind only Steven Packard's .407 for Klamath Falls. Mercado-Hood had 46 runs batted in, one back of league leader Vince Fernandez of Yakima Valley.
Following the game, Head Coach Bob Miller and President John McLean announced that Miller will not be returning in 2015 so he can concentrate on running his baseball program at Cuesta College, giving it his full attention. Miller was Co-Head Coach with Dennis Rogers in 2013.
