GreenJackets Split Double Header With Sand Gnats

Augusta, GA--The Augusta GreenJackets (56-61) split their double header, Saturday night, against the Savannah Sand Gnats (74-41) at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Sand Gnats won game one 9-2 and the GreenJackets won the second game, 3-1.
In the first game of the double header, the GreenJackets scored their two runs in the first two innings of the game. Chris Lofton scored the first run on a ground out in the first inning. In the second inning, Craig Massoni had the final run of the game, with a solo home run to left-center field, on a 2-2 pitch.
The Sand Gnats did not score until the fifth inning, but they managed to score nine runs over the last three innings. A double RBI by Jorge Rivero drove in the team's first run in the fifth inning. The team scored five runs in the sixth inning. Dominic Smith doubled to right field driving in the first run. With the bases loaded, Nelfi Zapata was hit by a pitch and Champ Stuart scored. A RBI triple by Jeff Glenn drove in the final three runs of the inning. Savannah scored their final three runs in the seventh inning. After Yeixon Ruiz walked, Champ Stuart tripled to right field. Dominic Smith then hit a two run home run to center field on a 3-1 pitch.
Sand Gnats' starting pitcher, Ricky Knapp (6-6), earned the win for the first game Saturday night. He pitched all seven innings and allowed seven hits, two earned runs while striking out five batters. GreenJackets starting pitcher, Robert Ramer (2-3) took the loss. In five innings pitched, Morris gave up three hits and two run earned runs.
The GreenJackets won game two, 3-1, Saturday night. The Sand Gnats scored their lone run, in the second inning, when Jonathan Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The GreenJackets rallied in the sixth inning when they scored all three runs. Back to back RBI singles by Ryan Jones and Cristian Paulino drove in the first two runs. A single by catcher, Gabriel Cornier, drove in the final run for the team.
GreenJackets' starting pitcher, Christian Jones (5-7), earned the win for the second game Saturday night. In six innings pitched, Jones allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out eight batters. Sand Gnats' closing pitcher, Bret Mitchell (2-1) took the loss. In one inning pitched, Mitchell blew the save, gave up five hits and three earned runs.
The GreenJackets conclude the series against the Savannah Sand Gnats on August 10, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It's Auggie's Birthday!
