Lee Blanks Mets in 4-0 Shutout Win

ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Brett Lee tossed a complete game shutout, leading the Fort Myers Miracle to a 4-0 win over the St. Lucie Mets in the series rubber match on Friday evening at Tradition Field.

Lee (9-3) scattered seven hits and induced three double plays from the Mets lineup. In 116 pitches, Lee threw 77 strikes and issued three walks with four strikeouts while stranding seven.

Locked in a pitcher's duel with Mets starter Kevin McGowan, the Miracle and Mets remained scoreless through six innings.

Stuart Turner broke the deadlock in the top of the 7th inning. McGowan (2-3) issued a lead-off walk to Travis Harrison. Dalton Hicks then advanced Harrison to second with a cue shot dribbler to third base. After Adam Brett Walker grounded out to third, Turner stepped to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Turner smoked a line drive into the gap in right center. Harrison scored easily and Turner chugged into third, 1-0.

The Miracle added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning off Mets reliever Paul Sewald. With one out, Harrison lined a single through the right side. Hicks then singled up the middle on a hit-and-run that landed Harrison at third base. Jason Kanzler entered as a pinch runner for Hicks at first base.

While Walker was at the dish, Sewald tossed a wild pitch that skipped between the legs of catcher Albert Cordero and Harrison raced home, 2-0. Kanzler moved up to second and then stole third base. After Walker was issued a base on balls, Sewald struck out Turner. Max Kepler then stepped up. On a 1-2 pitch, Walker took off for second on a delayed steal. As soon as Cordero threw to Gavin Cecchini covering the bag, Kanzler broke for home. Cecchini cut off the throw and fired back to Cordero, but Kanzler slid in safely to put the Miracle up 3-0.

Two pitches later, Kepler poked a triple down the third base line into the right field corner to score Walker and give the Miracle a 4-0 lead. Kepler finished the night 2-for-3 with a RBI.

At 102 pitches through eight innings, Lee returned to the mound in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning on 14 pitches.

McGowan (2-3) took the loss after giving up just one run in 6.2 innings on three hits.

The Miracle (68-47, 27-19) now travel to Roger Dean Stadium to open up a three-game set with the Palm Beach Cardinals on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Fans can catch every pitch on www.miraclebaseball.com with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Brice Zimmerman.
