Lake Erie Crushers News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers saw a four-run lead disappear on Wednesday night, as they surrendered six runs in the fifth inning and fell to the Rockford Aviators, 6-4.
The loss for the Crushers (38-32) was their second in a row following a five-game winning streak, while the victory for the Aviators (30-40) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Lake Erie seized control of the contest over the first four-and-a-half innings, with a 4-0 lead on the strength of two clutch, two-out hits, before the Aviators struck for six in the fifth inning to change the complexion of the contest.
The two teams traded scoreless innings through the first two frames, until the Crushers used a little two-out thunder to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Ryan Hutchison started the inning with a double, and PJ Torres followed with a walk. A wild pitch allowed them both to advance, before Andrew Davis delivered a two-out single through the left side to plate the first two runs of the game.
Two-out magic worked for the Crushers again in the top of the fourth inning. Juan Sanchez started the inning with a single through the right side, before Ryan Zimmerman (6-4) retired the next two batters. Hutchison reached on shortstop Kyle Dhanani's fielding error, and Torres followed with a two-run double to right-center, giving Lake Erie a 4-0 lead.
Rockford had just seven hits on the night, and recorded six of those in the fifth inning, as they sent all nine batters to the plate and scored six times to take the lead.
In his professional debut, Andy Roberts tossed four scoreless innings, and retired the first batter he faced in the fifth, before Ryan Breen began a string of six consecutive hits, with a solo homer to right. Tyger Pederson followed with a double, and Roberts was replaced by Jordan McCoy (2-1), who allowed four straight hits before being replaced.
Kalaika Kahoohalahala doubled Pederson home, and he scored moments later on a single from Dhanani. Brian Bistagne then singled to put two on with one out, when Edgar Corcino belted a two-run triple. Corcino came home a few moments later on Tanner Witt's groundout to complete the big inning.
Zimmerman scored the victory for Rockford, after allowing four runs, two earned on six hits while fanning four over six innings. He's now won four straight games. Gerardo Sanchez (16) secured the save with a scoreless ninth. McCoy took the loss after allowing four runs on four straight hits in the fifth inning.
Davis and Hutchison paced the Crushers with two hits each, both going 2-for-4 on the night, as they had done two nights before. Torres reached three times in four trips to the plate with a double and a pair of walks.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Rockford Aviators at Aviators Stadium in Loves Park, Ill., on Thursday night. Lefty Todd Kibby (6-2, 1.97) will start for the Crushers and the Aviators will counter with right-hander Kyle Brueggemann (2-7, 4.81). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
