August 5, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 4-1, on Tuesday night. Third baseman Brandon Laird homered, doubled, and knocked in three runs to give the Chiefs their second straight victory. The win increased their lead in the International League North to two games over Pawtucket and 2.5 over Rochester.

Syracuse (65-51) struck first in the bottom of the first inning against left-hander Matt Tracy. Shortstop Emmanuel Burriss led off the inning with a double to deep right-center field. Two batters later, Laird knocked him home with a double down the left-field line to put the Chiefs on the board, 1-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (57-60) tied the game in the top of the second inning against right-hander Taylor Hill. Designated hitter Kyle Roller led the inning off with a walk on six pitches. Two batters later, catcher Austin Romine doubled to center field to score Roller and tie the game at one.

The Chiefs retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning against Tracy. Left fielder Jeff Kobernus led the inning off with a double to center field. After a Burriss groundout moved Kobernus to third, second baseman Josh Johnson singled to center field to score Kobernus and give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.

Syracuse added on to its lead in the top of the sixth inning against Tracy. Burriss lead off the inning with a single to center field, and for the second time in the game, Laird capitalized on an RBI opportunity. This time, the third baseman crushed the 2-0 pitch from Tracy over the fence in left-center for his 13th home run of the year.

The Chiefs are back in action Thursday night as they take on the Louisville Bats for a four-game set at NBT Bank Stadium. Right-hander Mitch Lively is scheduled to take the mound against right-hander Brett Marshall. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
