Subban Inks 8-Year Extension with Montreal

Belleville Bulls News Release

MONTREAL, PQ - With an arbitration decision fast approaching, the Montreal Canadiens and P.K. Subban cut to the chase on Saturday. The former Bulls blueliner inked an 8-year, $72 million dollar contract extension with the club that drafted him in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Habs General Manager Marc Bergevin announced that the club has signed Subban through the 2021-2022 campaign for an average annual salary to the tune of $9 million per year. The two sides reached an agreement just prior to the league arbitrator's decision that locks up the franchise performer as a Canadien for several seasons to come.

Subban joins good company alongside Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, Zdeno Chara and others as one of eleven defencemen in the NHL who will make at least $7 million next season. The former Norris Trophy winner and Olympic Gold Medalist has proven he is in the NHL's elite class of defencemen.

Though he wrapped up his tenure in Belleville back in 2009, Subban remains the Bulls' all-time points leader among defencemen with 42 goals and 148 assists in 234 games. Perhaps more impressively, Subban carried his dominant regular season performances over into the playoffs where he registered 16 goals and 35 assists in 56 postseason contests over four years.

Subban had an outstanding playoff run with the Canadiens this past spring, providing offense from the blueline and registering 14 points in 17 games.

Subban enters his fifth season with the Canadiens this fall while brother Malcolm continues his tour of duty in the Boston Bruins organization and youngest brother Jordan, though still a Bull, will get a taste of Training Camp with the Vancouver Canucks to start the season.
