Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-2, from McCoy Stadium on Friday night. The Chiefs homered three times en route to the win, which returned Syracuse to sole possession of first place in the International League North Division.

Syracuse (63-49) opened the game with a blast off Pawtucket right-hander John Ely. Emmanuel Burriss rocketed Ely's first pitch of the game over the right-field fence for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Burriss has now hit four home runs this season, doubling his previous career high of two.

Pawtucket (63-51) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning off Syracuse right-hander Mitch Lively. With one out, former Syracuse Chief Corey Brown homered to right-center field to even the score at one.

The Chiefs responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, Josh Johnson tripled to left field. Burriss then singled to score Johnson and give Syracuse a 2-1 lead. With Steven Souza, Jr. up to bat, Burriss stole second base. Souza then walked to put runners on first and second. With Tyler Moore batting, Ely threw a wild pitch to advance Burriss to third base and Souza to second. After a strikeout and with Brandon Laird at the plate, Pawtucket catcher Dan Butler committed a passed ball, and Burriss scored for a two-run Chiefs advantage.

Syracuse added another run in the fourth inning off Pawtucket reliever Mike McCarthy. With one out, Jhonatan Solano worked a walk. Will Rhymes then tripled to right field to score Solano for a 4-1 Chiefs lead.

The Red Sox cut into the Chiefs' lead in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos Rivero led off with a double to left field. Brown then worked a walk to put runners on first and second. A Lively wild pitch allowed Rivero to move to third base. After a Garin Cecchini line out, Deven Marrero hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Rivero and cut Syracuse's lead to two.

The Chiefs extended their lead back to three in the eighth inning. Souza led off with a rocket over the right-center field wall for his 18th home run of the year and a 5-2 Syracuse lead.

Syracuse added an insurance run in the ninth inning with its third home run of the game. Rhymes hit a solo shot to right field off reliever Drake Briton for a four-run Chiefs lead.

Syracuse travels to Scranton/Wilkes Barre on Saturday to begin a two-game set against the RailRiders. Right-hander Josh Roenicke will take the mound for the Chiefs against RailRiders right-hander Chris Leroux. First pitch is set for 7:05.
