Barnstormers Come Up Short In Somerset

August 1, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers had only one inning of production on Friday evening, but it was nearly enough.

Down, 5-1, entering the seventh, Lancaster strung together their only three singles and their one walk to produce three runs but came up short, 5-4, to the Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Park.

David Purcey (1-0) carried a no-hitter and, on his part, perfect game into the seventh inning. He fanned Cole Garner, but Brett Carroll spanked a one-out single into left to break up the chance at history. One out later, Gabe Jacobo flared a single into left center. Dayton Buller walked on a full count pitch to fill the bases. Purcey, a left-hander, remained in to face Lance Zawadzki. The Lancaster shortstop ripped a single into right field, scoring two. The ball skipped past right fielder Luis Montanez for an error, allowing Buller to score as well and sending Zawadzki to third.

Zawadzki's brother, Grant, would face Mike DeMark to a different result. After torching a deep foul down the left field line, the younger Zawadzki succumbed on strikes to end the inning.

Lancaster never got another runner against either Jason Lowey or Jon Hunton, thanks in part to a pair of stellar defensive plays. Hunton earned his 33rd save.

Purcey had allowed a run in the sixth on a pair of throwing errors.

Mark Rogers (3-6) struggled from the beginning. He walked leadoff batter Jonny Tucker, and gave up singles to Jeff Dominguez and Daryle Ward to produce one run. Corey Smith produced a second with a foul sacrifice fly, and Somerset reloaded the bases on a single and a walk but could score no more.

The right-hander issued two more walks in the second, and Somerset was able to take full advantage as Smith roped a double that sailed over Carroll's head in center, scoring both runs.

Dominguez added an RBI single following a pair of two-out walks in the third for the 5-0 lead. Brandon Mann came in, and the bullpen shut down the Patriots for the rest of the night.

Rogers finished allowing five hits and seven walks. He struck out three in his 2 2/3 inning stint.

Lancaster returns home to face Southern Maryland, the first of 13 meetings between the two clubs over the next 30 days. Dan Osterbrock (7-3) will take the hill for the Barnstormers against right-hander Gaby Hernandez. Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
