Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Manny Burris, Steven Souza, Jr. and Will Rhymes all hit leadoff solo home runs while four Syracuse pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts as the Chiefs avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-2 win over the PawSox Friday night at McCoy Stadium in front of 7,262 fans to move back into first place in the North Division.
Pawtucket (63-51), which lost five players to the Major Leagues and one to the disabled list before the game, lost for just the third time in 16 games. Syracuse (63-49) moved one game ahead of the PawSox in the standings while Rochester moved to within 1.0 game of Pawtucket in the IL wildcard standings (pending the result of the Rochester-Lehigh Valley game.)
Prior to the contest Boston recalled Anthony Ranaudo, Mookie Betts, Will Middlebrooks, Tommy Layne and Alex Wilson were all promoted to Boston. Ryan Roberts was placed on the 7-day disabled list with an ankle injury. Additionally, catcher Dan Butler was removed from the game before the ninth inning after Boston's David Ross was injured in the big-league game against New York.
Chiefs starter Mitch Lively (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work and left the game with a 4-2 lead. Manny Delcarmen (1.1 innings, two strikeouts), Xavier Cedeno (0.2 innings, three strikeouts) and Rafael Martin (1.1 innings, three strikeouts) held the PawSox hitless for the final 3.1 innings.
Burris led off the game with a first-pitch homer against spot starter John Ely (0-1), who was filling in for Ranaudo who made his MLB debut at Fenway Park against the Yankees. After Corey Brown's solo blast in the second tied the score (15), Ely allowed two runs in the third highlighted by Burriss' RBI single.
Mike McCarthy, promoted from Double-A Portland before the game, entered in the fourth and allowed an RBI triple to Will Rhymes. McCarthy settled in from there, lasting a total of 3.2 innings in his Pawtucket debut and allowing one run on two hits.
Drake Britton permitted the long balls to Souza (18) leading off the eighth and Rhymes (4) to begin the ninth. Burriss went 3-for-5 while Rhymes was 2-for-4 for the Chiefs with each collecting a pair of RBIs.s
The PawSox seven-game homestand continues Saturday as the squad welcomes Columbus to McCoy for a four-game series with game one at 6:05 pm. Right-hander Matt Barnes (5-8, 4.81) will get the ball for manager Kevin Boles, while righty Kyle Davies (6-7, 4.28) is expected to start for the Clippers.
