Omaha Storm Chasers August 1st Game Notes

August 1, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

LAST NIGHT'S LOSS: Omaha lost their 10th in the last 15 games with Memphis at Werner Park as they dug an early 4-0 hole while going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Buddy Baumann allowed four runs in four innings (had allowed three runs in his first 15.0 innings as a starter), and gave up his first homer of 2014 (Triple-A leading 62.2 innings before the homer).

CHANGING LEAGUES: One of the top pitchers in the International League this season, Liam Hendriks, will make his Pacific Coast League debut tonight with Omaha. Hendriks led the IL in ERA (2.33, second best in all of Triple-A behind Jimmy Nelson of Nashville at 1.46 ERA), WHIP at 0.91 (tops in Triple-A) and fewest walks per nine innings at 0.60 (fewest in Triple-A). Hendriks has not walked more than one batter in any of his 18 Triple-A appearances this season, and has the fewest walks in all of Minor League Baseball among pitchers with 90 or more strikeouts (seven).

HAPPY ENDINGS: Omaha is 19-9 in series finales this season, and 8-5 at Werner Park, and have won seven consecutive series finales (last series finale loss was June 29 at Oklahoma City).

TIGHT SERIES: Omaha and Memphis have alternated wins in the last five games, and since the start of the 2011 season the two teams have split 62 games at 31-31 (2013: 7-9, 2012: 8-8, 2011: 9-6). Omaha has a record of 14-15 against the Redbirds at Werner Park (2014: 3-4, 2013: 2-6, 2012: 4-4. 2011: 6-2), the only American Conference team with a losing record against. Memphis can be the first team to take two season series at Werner Park (won six of eight games in 2013, Iowa won five of eight in 2013, and New Orleans won five of eight earlier this season).

TO ALL FIELDS: Matt Fields leads the PCL with 49 extra-base hits, and only trails the 53 by Andy Wilkins of Charlotte for most in Triple-A. His 26 doubles (tied for fifth most in the PCL) are a new career high, passing the 25 he had in 2008 with Vero Beach. The 49 extra-base hits (which also includes 21 homers, tied for fourth most in the PCL) ties his career high, which he set last year while with Northwest Arkansas. His 193 total bases are tied for fourth most in the league.

ORLANDO MAGIC: Paulo Orlando has six hits in the series (he had six hits in his last 12 games prior) and has reached 120 hits in a season for the first time since 2010 with NW Arkansas (under Brian Poldberg). He is one of seven Triple-A players with 120+ hits (one of four in the PCL).

SOUTH VS SOUTHPAWS: Omaha is 14-21 against left-handers this season (6-11 at home) and have lost six of eight against Redbirds southpaws (both wins have come against Tim Cooney).

CHECK THE RECORD: Johnny Giavotella still sits one run scored shy of 10th most all-time in Omaha history at 223. His next run will tie him with Joe Vitiello, 1994-99, who totaled 224 runs.
