Nick Franklin Set to Join Durham Bulls

DURHAM, NC - Infielder Nick Franklin, who was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays from the Seattle Mariners in the three-team trade that sent former Durham Bull David Price to the Detroit Tigers, will join the Bulls' roster today.

The 2009 first round draft pick who was selected 27th overall out of Lake Brantley High School was named a 2014 Pacific Coast League Midseason All-Star with the Tacoma Rainiers, and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game hosted by the Durham Bulls on July 16th. At the time of the trade, Franklin was hitting .294 with nine homers and 45 runs scored for the Rainiers.

Franklin, a switch-hitting middle infielder, has spent parts of each of the last two seasons with the Seattle Mariners. In 2013, his first year in the Majors, the Sanford, Fla. native hit .225 over 102 games and his 45 RBIs ranked second among AL rookies to Rookie of the Year Wil Myers. Across two stints with Seattle this season, Franklin hit .128 in 17 games.

Now in his sixth professional season, the 23-year-old has been named either a Midseason or Postseason All-Star on three occasions, and an MiLB.com Organization All-Star twice.

Also acquired by the Rays were LHP Drew Smyly and INF Willy Adames, each from the Detroit Tigers. Smyly will join the Rays' rotation, while Adames has been assigned to Single-A Bowling Green. Seattle acquired OF Austin Jackson from the Detroit.
