Tigers Sweep the Doubleheader

Williamsport, PA "" In game one of the doubleheader, the Connecticut Tigers (24-22) defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters (22-24) by a score of 5-0 Thursday night at Historic Bowman Field. The Tigers were led by their pitching in the shutout victory. In the seventh inning, the Tigers were two outs away from a combined perfect game. RHP Paul Voelker gave up a triple to CF Jiandido Tromp (1-3) to break up the perfect game bid. Voelker settled down and struck out the next two batters he faced to end the game.

Starter RHP Spencer Turnbull pitched three perfect innings while striking out one batter. RHP Josh Laxer (2-0) picked up his second win of the season as he pitched three perfect innings in relief of Turnbull. Voelker pitched one inning while just giving up the one hit of the game for the Crosscutters while striking out two batters.

C Tim Remes (3-3) put together his first multi-hit performance of the season as a member of the CT Tigers. Remes put the Tigers in front in the third inning with an RBI single. All three hits from Remes were singles. 3B Steven Fuentes (2-2) also led the offense with a two hit performance that included a fifth inning leadoff solo homerun that put the Tigers ahead 4-0. It was Fuentes first homerun of the season. LF Rashad Brown (0-4) didn't get a hit in the win, but chipped in with two RBI's.

In game two, the Tigers (25-22) defeated the Crosscutters (22-25) by a score of 6-5 in 13 innings. RF Mike Gerber (1-6) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the 13th inning to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead. The Tigers went nine straight innings without scoring a run until Gerber's two-run homerun. The homerun came off of Geber's college teammate, RHP Bryan Sova (1-2). With the win and the Brooklyn Cyclones loss, the Tigers are in sole possession of the Wild Card lead.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning as they were led by CF Ross Kivett (3-4). Kivett drove in the first four runs of the game. In the first inning, Kivett hit a two-run homerun which was his professional homerun and put the Tigers in front 2-0. Kivett then added a two-run double to put the Tigers ahead 4-0 in the top of the third inning. SS Brett Pirtle (3-6) chipped in with a three hit performance. 2B Will Maddox (2-6) and 3B Steven Fuentes (2-6) each had a pair of hits.

RHP Johnnie Kirkland made his professional start of his career as he went 4.2 innings while giving up three runs on six hits in a no decision. It was Kirkland's first start since his senior year at Southeastern University in 2013. RHP Joe Jimenez was one of four relievers used for the Tigers as he pitched 1.1 shutout innings while striking out 4 of the five batters he faced. RHP Will LaMarche (1-0) picked up his first win in just his third game with Connecticut. LaMarche pitched four innings while giving up one run on one hit and struck out five batters.

The three-game series wraps up tomorrow night as the Tigers RHP Fernando Perez (3-2, 4.84) is slated to face Crosscutters RHP Ricardo Pinto(0-2, 2.65). The pre-game show begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and cttigers.com.
