Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. ---- The Fresno Grizzlies (54-59) cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Reno Aces (60-53) in front of 6,567 fans on Thursday night at Chukchansi Park. Two-out rallies in the third and fourth gave the Grizzlies enough run support to snap their two-game losing streak and position themselves for a series split tomorrow night.
Fresno starter Kelvin Marte (W; 1-0, 1 ER/7.0 IP) embarked on his first career Triple-A start and held the Aces in check. He retired six straight to begin the game before allowing a base hit to Bobby Wilson to leadoff the top of the third inning. He limited the Aces, who entered the game owning the PCL lead in both batting average (.296) and hits (1,162), to just five total hits and allowed his only run on a Steve McQuail homer in the fifth. He struck out five Aces batters and did not issue a walk, while retiring the side in order in four of his seven innings.
The Grizzlies opened up the scoring as they plated two two-out runs in the bottom of the third inning. Darren Ford, who went 3-5 on the evening, started the rally with a triple (1) to right field. Mark Minicozzi walked in the next at-bat, and Adam Duvall, who returned to the Fresno lineup for the first time since being optioned back from San Francisco, brought Ford home with a line drive to center field to make it 1-0. Chris Dominguez followed up by lining a RBI single up the middle, plating Minicozzi from second.
Fresno extended their 2-0 lead to four runs in the fourth, as Trevor Brown and Gary Brown (no relation) smacked back-to-back two-out doubles. Gary plated the fourth run when he stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by catcher Bobby Wilson.
Chris Dominguez added his second RBI of the night with an opposite field solo home run (16) in the fifth. Adalberto Santos and Trevor Brown collected back-to-back RBI singles in the eighth for the sixth and seventh Fresno runs.
Reno plated one more run in the ninth as Aaron Cunningham doubled (16) and scored on a Mike Freeman single that deflected off shortstop Ydwin Villegas.
Aces starter Mike Bolsinger (L; 6-2) allowed a season-high tying five earned runs off eight hits.
Jason Berken (8-7, 4.21 ERA) will take the mound for Fresno tomorrow night in his fourth start against Reno (2-1, 5.00 ERA in three starts) this season. He will square off against right-hander Michael Lee (0-1, 3.38) First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT and Friday Night Fireworks will commence at the conclusion of the game, courtesy of PG&E.
