Sounds Fall in Suspended Game; Rally to Win in Nightcap

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (60-52) picked up a win and a loss against the Colorado Spring Sky Sox on Thursday night at Security Service Field.
First up was the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game, in which the Sounds offense never got going as the visitors lost 6-0 to the Sky Sox.
The game, which began on Wednesday as the first part of a doubleheader, picked up in the top of the third inning with the Sky Sox leading 2-0 courtesy of a two-run second inning against rehabbing Brewers pitcher Jim Henderson (0-1).
Henderson allowed Ryan Wheeler a solo home run and then left the bases loaded with two outs for reliever Jose De La Torre. Henderson tossed 21 pitches, 11 for strikes, in the losing effort and was charged with two runs after De La Torre chucked a wild pitch to score one of his inherited runners.
The rain proved too much for the field in the third inning, at which point the suspension was called. Play resumed at 6:00 PM Thursday night with Johnnie Lowe making the start for Nashville.
Lowe allowed one run to Colorado Springs in his three innings of work as Rafael Ynoa slapped a single through the hole at second in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, reliever Brent Leach surrendered three runs to the Sky Sox. First baseman Kyle Parker drove an RBI single up the middle for the first run, which was followed by a run-scoring throwing error committed by Leach as he tried to start a double-play at second.
Infielder Angelys Nina hit into an RBI groundout to score Parker from third base for the Sky Sox final run of the contest.
Nashville finished with six hits, led by Caleb Gindl, who went 2-for-3. Irving Falu, Jason Rogers, Matt Pagnozzi and Hector Gomez also recorded base knocks.
Following the suspended game was the Sounds regularly-scheduled Thursday night game with the Sky Sox, where the team fought back from two late deficits before finally holding on for a 5-4 win.
Trailing 4-3 in the final inning of the seven-frame contest, the Sounds got a rally started when a pitch hit catcher Shawn Zarraga to lead off the frame. Pinch runner Lucas May then advanced on a sacrifice bunt and groundout before Sean Halton came up with a two-out double to tie the game. Nashville then took the lead when catcher Dustin Garneau threw away a Pete Orr dribbler that allowed Halton to score.
Sounds starter Donovan Hand (1-6) twirled another masterful start, pitching 4.2 innings, but left the game with two runners on base and the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Molleken came in and allowed a two-run triple to Jason Pridie, with both runs charged to Hand to snap his string of 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run. Despite allowing a pair of runs on three hits, Hand's ERA since joining the rotation is 2.07 (3er/13ip) in three starts.
Colorado Springs tacked on another run shortly after, when Molleken threw a wild pitch to allow Pridie to score.
Nashville responded with another two-out rally in the top of the sixth that was sparked by a Eugenio Velez single. After taking two bases on a wild pitch by reliever Christian Friedrich, Velez scored on a triple by Jason Rogers. Matt Clark then tied the game with a home run to right field, his fourth of the season.
The Sky Sox took the lead off of Molleken again in the bottom of the sixth, when Drew Garcia came through with a one-out RBI single that scored Garneau to give Colorado Springs a 4-3 advantage.
Once the Sounds took the lead in the top of the seventh, Rob Wooten secured the important victory with a scoreless bottom half to pick up his seventh save of the season.
The Sounds and Sky Sox will play a doubleheader on tap Friday, with Nashville RHP Taylor Jungmann (5-5, 5.13) squaring off against RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-2, 3.46) in Game 1, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT. Following in Game 2 will be Sounds RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) against RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52). Jeff Hem will have the call, with 102.5 The GAME joining in progress at 5:55 p.m.
