Revs Rebound With Pair Of Late Runs For 7-5 Win

July 31, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution received back-to-back RBI singles from Bryant Nelson and Tim Battle with two outs in the seventh inning to break a tie score, snapping a brief two-game skid with a 7-5 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday night at Santander Stadium. The Revs will go for a series win in the finale on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands throughout. That trend began right away as the Blue Crabs scored twice in the top of the first, only to have the Revs answer with two of their own.

Southern Maryland's first inning runs came across as Jermaine Mitchell led off the game with a triple to right-center and scored on a sac fly by Angel Chavez, before a solo home run to left-center by Luke Murton gave the visitors a 2-0 head start.

The Revs answered as Justin Greene and Wilson Valdez got it started with singles, and after both advanced on a groundout, both scored on a single to left-center by Chad Tracy, tying the score at 2-2.

Eric Patterson connected on an opposite field home run to left-center leading off the bottom of the third, giving York a 3-2 lead.

Southern Maryland took the lead back with two in the fourth, as Jamar Walton ripped an RBI triple down the right field line and scored on a groundout by C.J. Ziegler to give the Blue Crabs a 4-3 advantage.

York responded with two in the fifth on an RBI double to left by Tracy, and an RBI single to left by Travis Garcia, nearly nailing Tracy in the basepath after having taken off for third base on the pitch.

Revs starter Alain Quijano had settled down to retire nine consecutive batters heading into the seventh inning, and came within a strike of qualifying for the victory but the Blue Crabs tied it once more on a two-out RBI single to center by Mitchell, knotting things at 5-5.

The Revs would have the final word, however, scoring twice in their half of the seventh. Patterson singled and Tracy walked with one out to set the table, as Nelson and Battle came through with the two-out RBI hits to provide the difference. Nelson drilled the tiebreaking single into right field, and Battle chopped a ball off the glove of Ziegler at first base on a diving attempt to provide the insurance.

Stephen Penney and Rommie Lewis each struck out a pair in perfect innings of relief, and each achieved personal accolades in the process.

The scoreless eighth inning for Penney marked his 18th consecutive scoreless appearance, establishing a new Revs record. He has now worked 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings, tying a club record for a reliever (Sean Stidfole, 2010).

Lewis' save marked his 25th of the season, adding to his club record. It was also the 30th of his Revs career, now one shy of tying the club's all-time record of 31 held by R.J. Rodriguez. He finishes the month of July with 10 saves, his second 10-save month of the season. The Revs had never had a 10-save month by a pitcher before this season.

Ian Durham (4-1) faced one batter, striking out Chavez to end the top of the seventh and earn the win. All told, the York bullpen retired all seven batters faced with five strikeouts.

Notes: The Revs move a game ahead of the pace set by the 2010 team for the franchise's best record all-time through 91 games, now 53-38. The Revs finish July with a 15-12 record for the month, their fourth winning month in as many months this season. The Revs' 3.24 team ERA in July is the third lowest in a month in team history, after establishing the second lowest month in club history in June (3.05). Revs pitchers allowed just 13 home runs in the month, a new record low. York righty Jorge Martinez (5-4, 3.07) will make the start on Friday night against Southern Maryland right-hander Brad Meyers (1-2, 7.33). It is Boy Scout Night with a postgame on-field campout. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
