Worcester Bravehearts News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - There were plenty of heroics at the ballpark July 30 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, as both the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs and Worcester Bravehearts scored runs in the final inning of their respective victories in their doubleheader.

The Bravehearts took the first game 4-3, while the Dirt Dawgs won game two 6-3. Both contests were seven-inning games.

Worcester trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh but got runners on first and second with one out. Left fielder Brendan O'Reilly then took the first pitch he saw to center field to score designated hitter Brad Speek and put runners on first and third. After intentionally walking shortstop Andy Lack to load the bases, second baseman Darian Ramage hit a sacrifice fly to center, which was deep enough to score center fielder Ian Strom for the winning run.

The Bravehearts scored the tying and winning runs off Wachusett reliever Ryan Venditti, as he took the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the season. Wachusett starter and Whitinsville, Mass., native Evan Mackintosh went six innings allowing only two hits and one earned run.

Bravehearts reliever Chris Dious took the win after pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and allowing only one hit.

The Dirt Dawgs outhit the Bravehearts 7-4 and got standout performances from right fielder Mike Corin and second baseman Richard Fecteau who both went 2-3. Corin hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning, and Fecteau finished with two runs scored.

The Dirt Dawgs trailed 3-1 at the start of the seventh inning in game two but exploded for five runs in the final frame to steal the victory from Worcester.

Clark University pitcher Miles Sheehan gave the Bravehearts a solid start, but the wheels fell off as Sheehan allowed the tying runs to reach in the start of the inning.

Worcester reliever Joe Saia replaced Sheehan but loaded the bases and gave up an RBI single Sam Goodwin-Boyd. The Dirt Dawgs then followed up with two runs on a fielder error by Darian Ramage. The Dirt Dawgs added two more runs, as Saia took his second loss of the season.

Matt Russell got the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief, and reliever Ryan O'Shea got the save in the seventh inning.

The Bravehearts and Dirt Dawgs will square off again at 7 p.m. July 31 on Doyle Field in Leominster, Mass.
