Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday night from McCoy Stadium. Designated hitter Alex Hassan drove in Ryan Roberts with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. The win brought Pawtucket to within one game of first-place Syracuse.
The teams traded runs in the first inning, with Syracuse (62-48) striking off the bat against left-hander Chris Hernandez. With one out, Eury Perez and Steven Souza, Jr. clubbed back-to-back doubles. The latter of the two scored Perez for a 1-0 lead.
Pawtucket (62-50) tied the game with one swing leading off the home half of the frame. Center fielder Mookie Betts tucked a 1-2 offering from A.J. Cole over the left-field fence for a solo homer, evening the score at one.
The Red Sox used the long ball to take the lead in the second inning. With one out, left fielder Garin Cecchini knocked a home run over the wall in right field, giving Pawtucket a 2-1 advantage.
The Chiefs tied the score in their next turn at bat. Souza, Jr. led off the third with a walk, Tyler Moore singled and Brandon Laird walked to load the bases. Designated hitter Jhonatan Solano then grounded into a double play, but Souza crossed home to tie the score at two runs apiece.
The game stayed tied all the way into the eighth, with the Chiefs stranding 10 runners on base over that span. In the bottom of the eighth, Pawtucket rallied against Syracuse's Ryan Mattheus, with Roberts starting the inning on a first-pitch single. Two batters later, Travis Shaw singled to right field, and Roberts raced to third base on the play. Hassan followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Roberts for a 3-2 lead.
Syracuse rallied in the ninth with two outs. Souza dropped a single into right field with two outs against right-hander Heath Hembree, making his Pawtucket debut. Two pitches later, the Chiefs' right fielder stole second base with Moore at the plate, and two pitches after that, Moore completed a four-pitch walk. Hembree, however, recovered to induce a fly out to right field from Laird and seal the game.
Syracuse and Pawtucket play the middle game in their three-game series on Thursday afternoon at 12:05. Chiefs right-hander Taylor Hill is scheduled to throw against Red Sox left-hander Edwin Escobar.
