Gwinnett Rallies to Top RailRiders, 3-1

July 30, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Moosic, Pa. - For the second straight day Tyler Pastornicky had a say in the outcome of a ballgame between the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) and Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta Braves) Wednesday afternoon at PNC Field. One night after connecting on a two-run double in the ninth the day before, the Braves' second baseman drove in a much needed insurance run in the ninth-inning en route to a 3-1 loss to Atlanta's top satellite.

It started out so well. Austin Romine doubled to open up the visiting second. A ground ball moved him to third and, with the infield drawn in, Rob Segedin laced a bounding ball to left to plate Romine from third for the 1-0 lead. SWB's offense went silent from there, collecting three base hits in its final seven at-bats and grounding into three double plays on the afternoon.

Matt Tracy fired four scoreless innings before issuing a leadoff walk to Edward Salcedo in the visiting fifth. A sacrifice bunt by Steven Lerud moved him to second and Joe Leonard's base hit to left, combined with a fielding error by Taylor Dugas, allowed Salcedo to plate the tying run, 1-1.

Christian Bethancourt's two-out solo home run off Tracy in the sixth gave Gwinnett its first lead of the game, and Pastornicky's two-out RBI insurance run in the ninth plated a hustling Lerud from second to bring the game to its final ledger of 3-1.

Tracy (1-4) worked six innings and gave up eight hits and two runs and struck out four in the loss, while G-Braves starter Gus Schlosser (7-5) spun five efficient frames of one-run ball en route to the win. Carlos Fisher (1), appearing for the fourth-straight time against SWB, danced around two walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.

The RailRiders will look to bounce back from the two-game slide with the third-game of the four-game series against the Gwinnett Braves on Thursday, July 31 at 7:05 p.m. SWB will start right-hander Bruce Billings (4-5, 5.35) while the Braves counter with lefty Daniel Rodriguez (6-11, 4.67). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM. Richardson ranks among the top five in the International League in both categories with 22 stolen bases (T-3rd) and 12 hit by pitches (2nd).
