Bowie Baysox News Release
Akron, Ohio - The Baysox (56-55) fell short of a sweep attempt in a 4-0 shutout loss to the Akron RubberDucks (60-52) Wednesday afternoon. After two critical wins to open the series against the team they are trailing in the playoff race, the loss drops Bowie to 3.5 games behind Akron with no remaining games between the two teams.
The Baysox never were able to get their offense going with only five hits in the shutout loss. The Baysox kept the game close throughout, as Baysox starter Tim Berry did not surrender the first run of the game until the bottom of the fifth inning, but the offense could not keep up.
After scoring seventeen runs total in the previous two games, the game started at a slow pace and quickly became a pitcher's duel. Akron starter Duke von Schamann started the game eight-up and eight-down until Sharlon Schoop doubled to right field to break the hitless streak.
Akron struck in the bottom of the fifth for their first run of the game when Tim Fedroff doubled to center field to later be knocked in on a sacrifice fly to center by Anthony Gallas.
After loading the bases with one out in the sixth inning, reliever Jason Gurka replaced Berry on the mound and issued a bases loaded walk to give Akron a 2-0 lead.
The Baysox were able to hold the RubberDucks scoreless again until the eighth inning when reliever Mychal Givens allowed Alex Lavisky to score off of a Ronny Rodriquez double. The second run of the inning scored when Justin Toole singled in Rodriquez.
Berry pitched five and one-third innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking three in the loss. Gurka pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Givens pitched the final inning and allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Starter von Schamann picked up the win for Akron, throwing seven shutout inning and allowing five hits, striking out six and walking one.
The Baysox look to have another strong series start against the Binghamton Mets on Thursday. RHP Matt Bischoff (2-4, 4.59) will take the mound for the Baysox against RHP Matt Bowman (6-6, 3.48).
