Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders rallied from two deficits and entered the ninth with a lead, but lost that advantage and saw a third rally come up a run short in a 6-5 setback.

UNDER MY PIRELA: Jose Pirela posted three hits for a second straight day and delivered his league tri-leading sixth triple along with an RBI and a run scored. His third multi-hit showing since the All-Star break lifted his season-long average to .313, good for 5th in the IL and 4th on the Yankees' farm. Before these last two nights he had been 7-for-42 (.167) since getting the nod as the IL's starting second baseman in its win over the PCL.

ON A ROLL: After his second straight multi-hit performance, Kyle Roller brought his post-All-Star break average up to .310 (13-for-42). Combined with his tenure at Double-A Trenton earlier this season, he ranks among the best on the Yankees' farm in batting average (9th, .301), homers (2nd, 19) and RBIs (T-5th, 55). He has rather large home-road SWB splits, posting home slashes of .235/.323/.435/.758 against road marks of .310/.411/.486/.897.

R&R: Rob Refsnyder struck out to end the game, but enjoyed a very strong performance on the night. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. He started in right field for the ninth time this season and for the third time in as many games played. When he plays second base, he has hit .339 with six of his seven home runs. When he plays right field, he has hit .216 with one bomb. Despite a dip in his average (.364-.260) and OBP (.494-.339) from June to July, he still owns a .405 OBP as a RailRider and an OPS of .905.

DIRTY DOZEN: Adonis Garcia went 1-for-4 with an infield hit in his final at-bat to stretch the team's top active hitting streak to 12 games. Only Syracuse's Zach Walters has a longer active IL hit streak at 13 games. During his string of success, which began right out of the All-Star break, Garcia has gone 18-for-50 with five extra-base hits, eight RBIs and seven runs scored (.360/.377/.500/.877). His .312 average places him 6th in the IL and 5th on the Yankees' farm. Earlier this season, Garcia assembled the team's top hitting streak in half a decade with a 17-gamer from May 3-20 that saw him hit .451. Only Buffalo's Kevin Pillar owns a longer IL hitting streak this season, an 18-gamer from April 17-May 6.

YO JOE: Corban Joseph delivered a two-out pinch-hit single to keep the team's ninth-inning rally going. He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games played, going 13-for-29 (.448) in that time. He has brought his average up to .258, the best contact clip he has sported since closing play at Buffalo on April 17 at .265. Joseph has gone 4-for-5 as a pinch hitter this season, producing two RBIs.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: The RailRiders played error-free baseball for the 11th time in 12 games. After spending a good portion of the season's first few months with the IL's worst fielding percentage, the RailRiders entered today 9th in the 14-team league at .979 while Gwinnett stood in last at .976.

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders fell to 0-6 when Nik Turley starts...The RailRiders lost for the eighth time when leading after seven innings and for the fourth time when leading after eight...They share the league lead for losses in each category with Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley respectively...The seventh inning included some unique theatrics...With Carmen Angelini at the plate, a two-out double steal gave Antoan Richardson second and usual catcher Austin Romine home plate to tie the game...On the same play, second baseman Tyler Pastornicky's throw home errantly went wide of catcher Christian Bethancourt to give Richardson third...With Angelini still batting, Carlos Fisher's pitch got wedged in Bethancourt's mask and home plate umpire Brian deBrauwere awarded home to Richardson per Rule 5.09 (g), which also meant a miscue on Bethancourt and the RailRiders' last lead of the game.
