Red Wings Game Notes

July 30, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

TODAY'S GAME: The Wings wrap up their 6-game homestand this morning (11:05 am) with the finale of a 2-game set against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) at Frontier Field. The Wings are currently 4-1 on the homestand and have won 6 of their last 7 games overall after a 2-8 stretch (July 9-July 21). Rochester currently sits 1.5 GB of Syracuse in the North Division, but holds a 0.5-game lead in the Wild Card over Pawtucket. The Chiefs and Paw Sox start a 3-game series from McCoy Stadium tonight. Lehigh Valley, meanwhile, dropped their 10th straight game last night and now own the worst record in the IL at 49-62. The 10-game losing streak for the IronPigs is their longest since dropping the first 11 games of their inaugural season in 2008.

- On Deck: The Wings embark on a 10-game, 11-day road trip beginning tomorrow night in Lehigh Valley...It's Rochester's longest road trip of the season and longest since an 11-G, 12-day trip Aug. 5-16 of last season over which the Wings went 6-5.

- At 15-11 in July, the Wings own the 4th most wins in the IL this month. In the Gene Glynn era, the Wings are 53-30 in the month of July.

WITH A WIN TODAY...:

- The Wings would sweep the 2-G series and win the season series over LHV for a second straight year. It would be the first time ever the Red Wings have won back-to-back season series over LHV. After going 11-5 vs. LHV in 2008, the Wings were just 26-38 vs. the 'Pigs from 2009-12. Over the last 2 seasons, ROC is now 18-11 against LHV.

- The Wings would return to their season-high water mark of 13 games over .500 for the first time since July 8.

MAY DAY: Red Wings RHP Trevor May is set to make his 16th start of the season and his 9th at home where he is 5-1, 1.45 ERA allowing just one ER over his last 5 starts at Frontier Field (5-0, 0.26 ERA; 1 ER/34.1 IP). May's last start (Thursday in Durham) was suspended in the 4th inning, therefore May has thrown just 6.0 innings since coming off the disabled list (right calf strain) on July 13. Over his last 8 starts prior to the calf injury suffered on June 21 @ BUF, May was 7-1, 1.78 ERA (10 ER/50.2 IP). If he had enough innings to qualify, May would rank 6th in the league in ERA (2.94), 2nd in BAA (.206), 3rd in WHIP (1.14), and 3rd among IL starters in SO/9IP (9.15).

- May has allowed 5 or fewer hits in 12 of 15 starts this season and has yielded 3 or fewer hits in 7 of 15 GS.

- This will be May's 1st career GS vs. LHV (PHI)... The Phillies originally drafted May in the 4th round of 2008 draft.

FOR STARTERS: Over the last 11 games, Wings starters have turned in 7 "quality starts" and posted a 2.48 ERA (18 ER/65.1). Over this span, the starters have limited the opposition to a .212 (49-231) BAA -- allowing just 11 extra-base hits, including only 4 over the last 6 games. On the season, the rotation is 41-31 with a 3.54 ERA.

HOME COOKIN': The Wings have won 12 of their last 16 games at Frontier Field as their 38-19 (.667) home mark is tops in the IL. Their 38 wins at home are 6 more than any other team in the league and T-most in Triple-A (Nashville, 38). Only Sacramento of the PCL has a better home winning percentage than the Wings at 35-17 (.673) in Triple-A.

The Wings are now 69-34 (.670) over their last 103 games at Frontier Field dating back to May 27, 2013. This season, the Wings are averaging a run more per game at home (4.9 R/G at HOME; 3.9 R/G on the ROAD) while the pitching staff's ERA is nearly a run better at Frontier Field (2.88 HOME ERA; 3.78 ROAD ERA).The Wings are also hitting 34 points better at home (.283 HOME; .249 ROAD) with a SLG % almost 60 points better.

DOIN' THE DOUGIE: INF Doug Bernier extended his season-long hit streak to 9 games with a single in the 5th inning last night. Over the streak, he's batting .378 (14-for-37) with 3 2B and 2 RBI. With a base hit today, he would become the 4th Red Wings player with a 10-plus game hitting streak this season (Parmelee, Beresford & Ramirez). Bernier had a career-long 11-game hit streak with the Wings last season. Over first 183 G with ROC, Bernier is hitting .295 (176- 596) with 85 RBI. Over 301 G ('09-'12) in the IL with SWB & IND, Bernier hit just .216 with 74 RBI.

- OF Reynaldo Rodriguez hit his 1st career Triple-A home run -- a 3-R shot off B. Lincoln...It was his 15th overall this season, but his first since June 30 with New Britain.

- 33% of the Wings homers this season (23 of 70) have come with at least 2 runners on (15 3-R HR & 8 GS) - INF James Beresford set a new career high with his 20th double of the season (prev. high was 19 in '10 w/ Beloit).
