Arroyo's Four Hits Propel Volcanoes to 5-3 Win

KEIZER, Ore. - Great pitching and tremendous offense have been reoccurring themes for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, during a second half of the season in which they have won five of their first six games. Monday night was no exception.
The Volcanoes' offense produced 10 hits, and Jason Forjet allowed just three runs in six innings, as Salem-Keizer defeated the Eugene Emeralds 5-3 at Volcanoes Stadium.
For the Volcanoes, it was their sixth win over the Emeralds in eight tries this season.
After scoring nine runs in the series opener, Salem-Keizer picked up right where it left off on Monday night with three runs and four hits in the bottom of the first.
Seth Harrison led off with his second triple in as many nights. He scored two batters later on an RBI single by Christian Arroyo. An infield single by Austin Slater drove in Ryder Jones, and Skyler Ewing scored on a fielder's choice for the third run.
Eugene battled back over the next two innings, cutting the deficit to just one run after a 2-RBI single by Michael Miller in the second. After a lengthy at-bat, Marcus Davis knotted the game with a double down the left-field line.
It appeared as if Franchy Cordero was going to be thrown out at the plate, but Jared Deacon was unable to fully secure the throw from Arroyo.
After tying the game, free passes from the Ems gave the lead right back to Salem-Keizer. Will Callaway reached second base on a throwing error by third baseman Chase Jensen. T Relaford was then hit by a pitch, and a walk to Deacon loaded up the bases.
Tyler Hollick put the Volcanoes ahead with a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
That one-run difference was good enough for Jason Forjet. After striking out 11 in his last outing against Spokane, Forjet twirled another brilliant start tonight. He struck out seven hitters in six innings while allowing just three runs.
Forjet retired the final 10 hitters he faced before handing the game over to the bullpen in the seventh.
Salem-Keizer's offense added on an extra run of insurance in the bottom half of the sixth inning. With a runner on second, Arroyo snuck a grounder through the left side for his second RBI of the evening
It was his fourth hit of the night, a new career high for the right-handed shortstop.
Dusten Knight, E.J. Encinosa and Eury Sanchez all tossed scoreless innings of relief for Salem-Keizer to preserve the 5-3 victory.
Up next: The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will look to sweep away the Eugene Emeralds in game three of a three-game series. Drew Leenhouts will make the start on the mound for Salem-Keizer. He is 2-3 with a 4.23 ERA in nine starts this season. In his last outing, Leenhouts notched a win after pitching seven complete innings and allowing just two runs. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. The gates open at 5:30 p.m.
