Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - Jharel Cotton fired nine innings of shut-out baseball on Tuesday night, pitching the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes back into a first-place tie with a 4-0 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm.
The reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week, Cotton followed up his seven shut-out innings last week in Bakersfield with just Rancho's second complete-game shutout in the Dodger era, becoming the first pitcher to throw a nine-inning shutout since Red Patterson did it on August 25th of 2011.
Cotton, who allowed just two hits and two walks over nine innings, got all the support he'd need on Tuesday night in the first, as the Quakes tallied a pair of runs to take the lead for good.
Erisbel Arruebarrena tripled home Casio Grider, then scored on a Jeremy Rathjen RBI single, making it 2-0.
Aaron Miller would double home Arruebarrena in the third as the Quakes took a 3-0 advantage over Storm starter Zach Efliln (9-7).
Rancho got their final run in the sixth, as Grider doubled home Adam Law for a 4-0 lead.
Cotton (5-7) was never tested, as he struck out a career-high 11 batters and faced just three batters over the minimum.
The win for Rancho (22-16, 54-54) moves the Quakes back into a first-place tie with the Storm, heading into Wednesday's series-finale.
The Quakes will send Lindsey Caughel (7-4) to the hill, opposite Storm starter Coin Rea (9-5), with first pitch scheduled for 11:00am.
Rancho will finish their brief road trip on Wednesday, then open a four-game set on Thursday at LoanMart Field. Thursday night is another Thirsty Thursday, as fans can enjoy $2 domestic 16-oz drafts, $2 24-oz Pepsi Products and $3 premium 16-oz drafts throughout the night, all thanks to Bernards Construction. Game time in the series-opener against Bakersfield on Thursday will be 7:05pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000. We hope to see you very soon at LoanMart Field. Go Quakes!
