HarbourCats Walk the Yard in Wenatchee

July 30, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

The Victoria HarbourCats handed the homestanding Wenatchee Applesox a free pass on Tuesday night -- 17 base on balls, to be precise, plus one hit batter in a 13-4 win for the playoff-contending Applesox.

The batter who was hit was ex-HarbourCat Cole Kreuter, now a member of the Applesox.

In front of a crowd of 879, starting pitcher Mikey Wright took the loss, but he and four other pitchers put themselves in bases-loaded situations almost the entire night. Wright lasted just one inning, giving up four runs and walking two and giving way to Dylan Stowell. Carson Schneider, Tim Peabody and Preston Ryan also had rough nights on the mound, with Schneider the most effective of the bunch.

The great news about baseball -- there's always tomorrow, and the teams meet again Wednesday with Alex FaGalde getting the start for Victoria. Alex Rogers is due to pitch in Thursday's game.

Wenatchee led 9-1 after three innings and added four more in the seventh inning, cruising to an easy win.

The HarbourCats' loss means the team is mathematically eliminated from the West Division chase, assuring the powerful and well-coached Bellingham Bells of that pennant and a playoff berth. The HarbourCats remain in the hunt for the wildcard spot, but that is slipping away as Victoria dropped to 19-24 and slipped into last place in the West Division, behind Cowlitz and Kitsap. The HarbourCats are 11-11 on the road, and 8-13 at home.

A highlight was Alan (Alan! Al! Alan! Alan!) Baldwin, who was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. First baseman Gabe Clark, who sits one home run away from tying the West Coast League record of nine home runs, was 0-4.

The HarbourCats return home on Friday to play the Bellingham Bells, on Edge Energy Bar Gamenight, with special pre-game ceremonial pitches that sports fans will NOT want to miss. The game starts at 7:11pm, and tickets are available at www.harbourcats.com/tickets, or at the gate, or at the team office at 1814 Vancouver Street.

On Saturday, the game is a celebration of team mascot Harvey's birthday as Mascotlandia, sponsored by Rifflandia, takes the spotlight. On Sunday, it's Island Savings $25K Pitch afternoon game (1:05pm).

The HarbourCats head to Walla Walla for a series next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but return home to close the regular season Friday through Sunday against the Kitsap BlueJackets -- a series that includes the second fireworks night of the season, set for Saturday, August 9.
