Spikes Rack up 17 Hits in 13-8 Win over Scrappers

State College Spikes News Release

NILES, OH - The State College Spikes used a 17-hit attack, including home runs from Robelys Reyes and Danny Diekroeger, to bolster a solid start from Ian McKinney in his return to the club and take a 13-8 victory from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.

Reyes notched his second home run of the season with a solo shot to right field in the third inning as part of a three-hit night in which he came a triple shy of the cycle. Diekoreger added the exclamation point to the night with his fourth long ball of the year, a three-run homer in the ninth that gave the Spikes (31-14) ample insurance at the end of the game.

State College took a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, and withstood a Mahoning Valley (19-26) rally late in the contest to hang on for the win. Seven different Spikes delivered multiple hits, and five players collected multiple runs batted in during the game.

Diekroeger scored four runs himself, and reached base three times. Alex De Leon walked twice to reach base four times total on the evening.

McKinney (1-1) made his return to the Spikes after compiling a 1.26 ERA over six starts at Rookie-level Johnson City, and put together a quality effort early on in the game. The southpaw retired 14 straight batters from the first through the sixth innings, and yielded just four hits and a hit batsman over the first six frames.

In the seventh, McKinney was charged with all four runs that the Scrappers scored in the inning, but still earned the win. The 2013 fifth-round draft choice struck out four batters on the night.

The 17 hits were the most for the Spikes as a team in one game this season, and enabled State College to get back out to a nine-game lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division. State College has now won all but one road series this year.

The Spikes are also just a game back of Hudson Valley for the top record in the NYPL, and host the Renegades in a three-game series starting on Saturday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Wednesday, the Spikes return home to start a six-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles). The game opens up a three-game series between the two teams. State College is now scheduled to start right-hander Will Anderson (4-1) on the mound. Aberdeen has not yet announced a starting pitcher, as they shuffle the staff following a start on rehab assignment by the Orioles' Ubaldo Jimenez on Tuesday night.
