Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, OH) July 29, 2014 - A three-run seventh inning and the starting pitching of righthander Zach Davies propelled the Bowie Baysox to a 5-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks Tuesday evening at Canal Park.
Already leading 2-1, Bowie extended their advantage in the seventh with an RBI double by David Freitas off Akron reliever Jordan Cooper, sending Glynn Davis home. The Baysox would tack on two more runs in the inning, taking a comfortable 5-1 lead.
After the loss, Akron (59-52) remains in sole possession of 2nd place in the EL West, 7 1/2 games behind first place Richmond. With the win, Bowie (56-54) now trails the Ducks by 2 1/2 games. Wednesday's 12:05 p.m. game is the final regular-season meeting between the RubberDucks and Baysox.
Akron starter Toru Murata (5-4) tossed six innings for Akron, ultimately earning the hard-luck loss. He allowed just three hits, two runs, walked three batters and struck out three in his first Akron appearance since June 28th.
The win went to Zach Davies (7-6), who threw six innings, allowed six hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out five. His two walks came in the first inning. He also worked around back-to-back doubles in the fourth and stranded two more runners on base in the sixth, his final inning.
Shortstop Erik Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games with a single in the seventh. In the series, Gonzalez is now 4-7.
Akron's Justin Toole drove in Akron's only run of the game with an RBI single in the second inning.
The Akron RubberDucks and Bowie Baysox will close out the three-game series Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. Righty Duke von Schamann (4-6) will start for the Ducks, and lefty Tim Berry (5-6) will take the mound for Bowie. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
