Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are partnering with Baptist Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital to officially welcome the newest residents of Pensacola - newborns - to the Wahoos Life. Now every infant born at Baptist or Sacred Heart will receive a Pensacola Blue Wahoos cream knit beanie that reads "Pensacola Blue Wahoos Rookie" with the team's fish logo.

This past offseason, Jonathan Griffith, Blue Wahoos Executive Vice President, welcomed his first daughter. In June, the team's Athletic Trainer, Charles Leddon, had his first son. With a case of baby fever crawling its way through the organization, the team felt a key - and adorable - part of their fan demographic was being neglected.

"The Blue Wahoos brand of entertainment is fun for all ages, so our goal is to continuously engage all parts of our fan demographic and community," said Griffith. "With amazing hospital partners like Baptist and Sacred Heart, the idea to outfit every newborn with an official Blue Wahoos beanie seemed to be the perfect way to welcome our youngest rookies to our community and the Wahoos Life."

Prior to the Wahoos beanie initiative, the hospitals issued all infants a solid, uniform cap.

"I am sure new parents will treasure this keepsake that represents our very own Blue Wahoo baseball team. Many thanks to the organization for this special contribution," said Rebeccah Vires, MSN, MBA, RNC, Clinical Manager, Labor and Delivery, Baptist Hospital.

In addition to providing beanies to the two hospitals, the team partners with Baptist and Sacred Heart in other fundraising and awareness campaigns. On Saturday, August 23rd the team will do a Marines Jersey Auction to benefit The Eagle Fund of the Andrews Institute Foundation. The proceeds from every Saturday night tennis toss also benefit The Eagle Fund, a non-profit that provides wounded warriors access to the highest quality of care possible.

One Saturday a month the Blue Wahoos and Sacred Heart honor a local child who is need of a smile and a stadium full of cheers. During an inning break, the honoree circles the bases while getting high fives from all the Blue Wahoos and opposing team players and Kazoo. The next Home Run for Life is on Saturday, August 16th.
