Raptors Come from Five Down to Win

July 29, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Ogden Raptors News Release

The Ogden Raptors staged their largest comeback of the season in their 10-7 win over the Idaho Falls Chukars Monday night at Melaleuca Field.

The Raptors were down five runs entering the fifth inning, trailing 7-2. However, in the top of the fifth, Ogden put four on the board to get right back into the game. With one out, Devan Ahart reached base when he struck out on a wild pitch and beat the throw to first. Joe Meggs followed with a single, and Cody Bellinger walked to load the bases. Julian Leon then hit a double to right-center field to clear the bases. After an error moved Leon to third, Ivan Vela hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Leon and bring the Raptors to within one run, 7-6.

Leon's three-run double was the first extra-base hit for the Raptors this season.

The Raptors took the lead in the seventh inning. With one out, Bellinger walked again, and two batters later, Justin Chigbogu reached on an error. Vela followed with a two-run double to left to take the lead 8-7.

In the top of the ninth, the Raptors loaded the bases again on a Bellinger single, an error and a walk to Chigbogu. Andrew Godbold hit the second bases-loaded, extra-base hit of the season for the Raptors with a two-run double, putting Ogden up 10-7.

The Chukars tried a comeback of their own in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Hill walked to start the frame, and Kyle Pollock hit an infield single to third base. Luis Valenzuela grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. After Brandon Downes struck out, Cory Toups walked to load the bases with two outs. Brandon Thomasson then hit a comebacker that hit Raptors closer A.J. Vanegas in the side. Vanegas was able to recover and throw out Thomasson at first to end the game.

Ryan O'Hearn was left on deck. O'Hearn, after going 3-for-3 with two walks, finished a home run short of the cycle. O'Hearn is hitting .613 against Ogden in 31 at bats.

The five-run deficit was the largest the Raptors had overcome this season, beating a four-run deficit against Billings on July 19.

The Raptors will go for their second-straight two-game sweep of the Chukars Tuesday. Jeff Brigham takes the mound for Ogden against Bryan Brickhouse. Game starts at 7:15 and can be heard on 97.5 The Zone.
