Zephyrs Squander a Pair of Three-Run Leads, Fall to Omaha 7-6

Whit Merrifield hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning, lifting the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 7-6 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday night.

The Z's had a pair of three-run leads erased by the Storm Chasers, who earned a split of the four-game series and won for only the second time in eight meetings at Zephyr Field this season.

For the second game in a row, the Zephyrs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Ed Lucas ripped a one-out double and scored a batter later on Justin Bour's double to right-center. Kyle Jensen followed with a two-run homer, his 21st of the season to give him 74 RBI, second-most in the PCL.

Omaha rallied against Z's starter Anthony DeSclafani, cashing in a leadoff double by Paul Janish in the third before scoring twice in the fourth.

Francisco Pena led off the fourth with a double, and a walk to Matt Fields was followed by an RBI double by Pedro Ciriaco, the fourth two-base hit in a span of nine batters to force DeSclafani from the game. Janish then greeted reliever Edgar Olmos with a game-tying single.

New Orleans regained the lead in the fifth. Matt Angle singled to lead off and went to third when Danny Black's grounder scooted between the legs of Janish at shortstop. Angle scored on a sacrifice fly by Ed Lucas, and Mark Canha drilled a home run to straightaway center field for a 6-3 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Omaha batted around in the sixth. Fields crushed his 21st home run of the season off Olmos with one out, and after back-to-back singles by Ciriaco and Janish, the Zephyrs turned to Grant Dayton (1-2), who surrendered Merrifield's three-run blast.

Janish led the Storm Chasers' 13-hit attack with two singles and a double, and Johnny Giavotella reached base four times.

Joe Saunders (1-3) gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits in five innings but got the win thanks to the sixth-inning rally.

Olmos was charged with three runs on four hits in two innings in relief of DeSclafani, who struck out six and walked one in 3 1/3 innings.

The Zephyrs continue a 13-game homestand on Tuesday with the opener of a four-game set against the Iowa Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
